Lesson Summary:

This lesson helps in not only educating students on hurricane safety and helping others prepare for potential disaster, but it also provides the learner with the opportunity to learn how to communicate on a broad basis.

TEKS:

The learner should learn how to communicate effectively with other persons.  The learner should also be able to provide information on the history of weather related disasters in a given rural community and help the public prepare for the hurricane.

Student Objectives/Learning Outcomes:

The learner should learn how to effectively communicate with others and help prepare a community for a disaster based on their knowledge of hurricanes.

Lesson Plan Procedures:

Day 1, 50 minutes- The instructor will provide students with information on hurricanes through lecture and notes.

Day 2, 50 minutes- Students will be assigned groups by the instructor and will work through the Webquest presentation together.  The instructor will continuously monitor students’ progress and answer questions.

Day 3, 50 minutes- Continued from Day 2, students will continue working with their assigned groups on the Webquest activity.  Students should begin working on their plan of action for the rural community.  The instructor will continue to monitor students’ progress and answer questions.

Day 4, 50 minutes- Continue working with assigned groups.  The students should have their plan of action completed for the rural community by this time.  The instructor will continue to monitor students’ progress and answer questions.

Day 5, 50 minutes- Assessment of the students’ knowledge.  The learners will present their plan to the class with the class acting as a town meeting.  The learners should be prepared to answer questions from the community (class) and will be graded based on the rubric provided.

Approximate Time Needed:

5- 50 minute class periods.

Prerequisite Skills:

The learner should have a thorough knowledge of how to use a computer and a web-based program to further their education.

Accommodations for Differentiated Instruction

 

Resource Student:

Student should be grouped with other students who are willing to work with cooperatively with the student.  The student may also be given extra time for individual work and be allowed to attend CMC. 

 

Non-Native English Speaker:

The student(s) should be grouped with other bilingual students who are completely fluent in English to work with.  Extra time may be necessary to finish the project. 

 

Gifted Student:

Gifted students should construct a PowerPoint presentation to present to the class based on how to prepare the town for the hurricane.
