About the town
History
: :Kawthaung, is the legal name accepted by current govenrment ruling.
Once the time british rule, it is known as Victoria
Point. Thais calls it Kaw Saung
meaning two islands-town. The word, Kawthaung, perhaps, most probably
come from that. The Pashu(as called by Burmese, believed to be the
same ethnic race as current Malay) also called the town as Pusi
Lowa, same meaning as Kaw Saung.
The current Kawthaug Town place is said that first permanently
lived by Pashu. During the first british rule, Kawthaung is just
a small fishing village, and the govenment office for the region
is at Maliwan, about 24 miles north.
Maliwan residents, mostly Chinese, Thais, at that time is good earning
with tin mines. But Maliwan is not good in place for deep sea port
and finally the british government decided to move his offices to
Kawthaung, after that the town grows quickly.
