Trinity on Trial An in-depth examination of Trinitarian doctrine
The Host of Heaven

And God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth. And it was so. And God made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night; he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:14-17).

Angels, People, and Stars

The word tsbaba is often translated as "host" or "army." The word seems quite similar to the English word "legion." It simply refers to a company or multitude.

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. (Genesis 2:1).

Bring out the people of Israel from the land of Egypt by the hosts of them. (Exodus 6:26; cf. 12:14 41, 51).

Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by their families, by their fathers' households, according to the number of names, every male, head by head from twenty years old and upward, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel, you and Aaron shall number them by the hosts of them. (Numbers 1:2-3).

The sons of Israel shall camp, each man by his own camp, and each man by his own standard, according to the hosts of them. (Numbers 1:52).

Since you saw no form on the day that the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire, beware lest you act corruptly by making a graven image for yourselves, in the form of any figure, the likeness of male or female, the likeness of any beast that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the air, the likeness of anything that creeps on the ground, the likeness of any fish that is in the water under the earth. And beware lest you lift up your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of heaven, you be drawn away and worship them and serve them, things which YHWH your God has allotted to all the peoples under the whole heaven. (Deut 4:15-19; cf. 17:3).

When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of men, he fixed the bounds of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God. (Deut 32:8 LXX, Dead Sea Scrolls. See Acts 17:26; Gen 10:32; 11:9).

Therefore, hear the word of the LORD. I saw YHWH sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing by Him on His right and on His left. (1 Kings 22:19; cf. 2 Chron 18:18).

They forsook all the commandments of the LORD their God and made for themselves molten images, even two calves, and made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal. Then they made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire, and practiced divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him. (2 Kings 17:16-17).

LORD of Hosts

For he rebuilt the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed; and he erected altars for Baal and made an Asherah, as Ahab king of Israel had done, and worshiped all the host of heaven and served them. He built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, "In Jerusalem I will put My name." He built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD. (2 Kings 21:3-5; cf. 2 Chron 33:3).

You alone are the LORD. You have made the heavens, The heaven of heavens with all their host, The earth and all that is on it, The seas and all that is in them. You give life to all of them And the heavenly host bows down before You. (Nehemiah 9:6).

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made, And by the breath of His mouth all their host. (psalm 33:6).

Praise the LORD ! Praise the LORD from the heavens; Praise Him in the heights! 2 Praise Him, all His angels; Praise Him, all His hosts! 3 Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all stars of light! 4 Praise Him, highest heavens, And the waters that are above the heavens! 5 Let them praise the name of the LORD, For He commanded and they were created. 6 He has also established them forever and ever; He has made a decree which will not pass away. 7 Praise the LORD from the earth, Sea monsters and all deeps. (Psalm 148:1-7).

For the LORD'S indignation is against all the nations, And His wrath against all their hosts; He has utterly destroyed them, He has given them over to slaughter. So their slain will be thrown out, And their corpses will give off their stench, And the mountains will be drenched with their blood. 4 And all the host of heaven will wear away, And the sky will be rolled up like a scroll; All their hosts will also wither away As a leaf withers from the vine, Or as one withers from the fig tree. (Isaiah 32:2-4).

To whom then will you liken Me That I would be his equal?" says the Holy One. 26 Lift up your eyes on high And see who has created these stars, The One who leads forth their host by number, He calls them all by name; Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power, Not one of them is missing. (Isaiah 40:25-26).

Then I said, `How I would set you among My sons And give you a pleasant land, The most beautiful inheritance of the hosts of the nations. (Jeremiah 3:19).

They will spread them out to the sun, the moon and to all the host of heaven, which they have loved and which they have served. (Jeremiah 8:2).

The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled like the place Topheth, because of all the houses on whose rooftops they burned sacrifices to all the heavenly host and poured out drink offerings to other gods. (Jeremiah 19:13).
