"Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of man and the number is 666."
Count the Number
The Greek word here for "calculate" is the word psephizo which means to count, calculate. It comes from the word psephos which means "pebble." In the ancient courts of justice the accused were condemned by black pebbles and acquitted by white. The word also refers to a vote on account of the use of pebbles in voting. These black and white pebbles are used to this day in fraternal secret societies such as the Masons for voting. The early Greeks used pebbles arranged in patterns to learn arithmetic and geometry. A Greek synonym for the word "pebbles" is kalkuli and is the origin of the word "calculate." This word seems to mean "count" or "add up" or "calculate."
For which one of you, when he wants to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost to see if he has enough to complete it? (Luke 14:28).
And this is just what I did in Jerusalem; not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests, but also when they were being put to death I cast my vote against them (Acts 26:10).
To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.' (Rev 2:17).
The Philospher's Stone
A substance that was believed to have the power of transmuting base metal into gold and/or a substance held capable of prolonging life indefinitely. Also called elixir. It may be a metaphor for the key to the wisdom of creation.
"The stone, also referred to as the "tincture," or the "powder" (Greek xerion, which passed through Latin into Arabic as elixir), was allied to an elixir of life, believed by alchemists to be a liquid derived from it. Inasmuch as alchemy was concerned not only with the search for a method of upgrading less valuable metals but also of perfecting the human soul, the philosopher's stone was thought to cure illnesses, prolong life, and bring about spiritual revitalization. The philosopher's stone, described variously, was sometimes said to be a common substance, found everywhere but unrecognized and unappreciated." (Encyc. Brit., 15th ed., 1976)
Isopsephia (iso meaning "equal" + psephos) is the Greek word for the practice of adding up the number values of the letters in a word to form a single number. The value of Iesous (Jesus) is 888. 8 is the symbol of infinity. The Hebrew version is known as Gematria.
When the virgin shall give birth to the word of God the Most High, she shall give to the word a name, and from the east a star will shine in the midst of day gleaming down from heaven above proclaiming to mortal men a great sign. Yes, then shall the son of the great God come to men, clothed in flesh like mortals on earth. Four vowels he has and twofold the consonants in him ... and now I will declare to you the whole number ... eight monads, and to these as many decads, and eight hundreds his name will show. (The Sybylline Oracles, circa 150 A.D.)
"I love her whose number is 545" (On The Walls of Pompey)
Facts to Keep in Mind
The Greek Number
The Greek for 666 is hexakosioi hexekonta hex. Our English word "six" comes from the Latin word sex which is akin to the Greek hex. The Latin word for "sex" is sexus. We get our English word "hexagon" from this Greek word hex. It is also said the Greek word stigma, similar to sigma, is the Greek number for "six" and meant a mark. Today it means a mark of disgrace. This calls to mind the mark of Cain.
The Mark of the Beast
The Greek word in verse 17 for "mark" is charagma (not the same word use in the LXX for Cain). It is a cognate of the word charakter used in Hebrews 1:3. It seems to be a synonym for "image" in that it is meant to be an engraved and reflected image or likeness of something else. The mark of the beast seems to be directly associated with the image of the beast and they are perhaps the same thing in some sense.
And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life. And it was given to him to give breath/spirit to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even speak and cause as many as do not worship the image of the beast to be killed. (Rev 13:14-15).
Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and his image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed in full strength in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever; they have no rest day and night, those who worship the beast and his image and whoever receives the mark of his name." (Revelation 14:9-11).
And I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, holding harps of God. (Rev 15:2).
And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. (Rev 20:4).
In Revelation 13 there are two beasts, a beast of the sea and a beast of the land. In ancient middle east lore, seven-headed Leviathan was the monster of the sea and Behemoth the beast of the land. Leviathan was known also known as Lothan to the Canaanites. In that account Baal defeats Lothan. The Babylonian account has Marduk defeating Tiamat. The Hebrew account is vague and often depicts YAHWEH battling Yam, the raging sea. However, it seems that Leviathan is the cause of the sea chaos. The serpent who deceived Eve was the living creature of the land promising her gnosis.
And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore. Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority. I saw one of his heads as if it had been slain, and his fatal wound was healed. (Revelation 13:1-3).
You divided the sea by Your strength; You broke the heads of the dragons (tannim) in the waters. You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness. (Psalm 74:13).
God created the great sea serpents (tannim) and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind; and God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:21).
Now the serpent was more clever than any creature of the land which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, "Indeed, has God said, `You shall not eat from any tree of the garden'?" The woman said to the serpent, "From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, `You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.' " The serpent said to the woman, "You really won't die! "For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." (Genesis 3:1-5).
Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth and he had two horns like a lamb and he spoke as a dragon. He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. And he makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast. (Rev 13:14).
Michelangelo's Moses ca. 1515
The idea of the horned Moses appears to come from a mistranslated text of Exodus 34:29. The word there is qaran which is intended to mean "shine" or "radiate" in the sense of light radiating from Moses' face. The word is however the same Hebrew word for "horn." Note that it also sounds very similar to "Koran" (qrn) which means to read or recite. Horns also represent Kingly power as does the radiant glory of God. We must recall however that Paul's false prophets were Jews promoting the keeping of the Law.
For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. (2 Cor 11:13).
The False Prophet and the Land Beast
Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. (Matthew 7:15).
At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another. Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many. Because lawlessness is increased, most people's love will grow cold..... Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. Then if anyone says to you, `Behold, here is the Christ,' or `There He is,' do not believe him. For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to deceive, if possible, even the elect. Behold, I have told you in advance. So if they say to you, `Behold, He is in the wilderness,' do not go out, or, `Behold, He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe them. (Matthew 24:10-26).
Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by giving heed to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, through the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared. (1 Timothy 4:1-2).
John refers to someone called "the antichrist." Paul refers to this person as "the Lawless One" and John speaks on this theme of lawlessness in the same context. Both Paul and John say the power of the antichrist was already at work. Paul refers to this as the "mystery of lawlessness" and John as "the spirit of the Antichrist" now already at work in the world. The Antichrist appears to be the false prophet, the beast of the land. Paul also calls him "the son of destruction," a name also appled to Judas by Jesus in John. Judas is an antichrist type.
While I was with them, I kept them in thy name, which you have given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of destruction, that the scripture might be fulfilled. (John 17:12).
Children, it is the last hour; and just as you heard that antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have appeared; from this we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not really of us; for if they had been of us, they would have remained with us; but they went out, so that it would be shown that they all are not of us. But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know. I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth. Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. (1 John 2:18, 22).
Every one who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. You know that he appeared to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him. Little children, let no one deceive you. He who does right is righteous, as he is righteous. He who commits sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God commits sin; for God's nature abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God. By this it may be seen who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not do right is not of God, nor he who does not love his brother. (1 John 3:4-7).
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world. (1 John 4:1-3).
Who is it that overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is he who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not in the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the witness, because the Spirit is the truth. There are three witnesses, the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree. If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater; for this is the testimony of God that he has borne witness to his Son. (1 John 5:5-9).
For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist. (2 John 1:7).
Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above all called deity or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming he is deity. Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things? And you know what restrains him now, so that in his time he will be revealed. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only that which now restrains will do so until it is taken out of the way. Then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming; that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders, and with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false, in order that they all may be judged who did not believe the truth, but took pleasure in wickedness. (2 Thess 2:3-10).
And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs; for they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them together for the war of the great day of God, the Almighty. (Revelation 16:13-14).
And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone. (Revelation 19:20).
The Land and the Sea
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband. (Revelation 21:1-2).
The sea seems to be the people of God, the children of Abraham who are as sand on the seashore and who are the bride of Christ transformed into resurrection glory at the Last Judgment. However, I am unsure about this.
So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore. (Rev 12:17 - 13:1)
And I saw something like a sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who had been victorious over the beast and his image and the number of his name, standing on the sea of glass, holding harps of God. (Rev 15:2).
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. (Rev 20:13).
Buying and Selling
And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name. (Revelation 13:16-17).
The weight of gold which came in to Solomon in one year was 666 talents of gold. (1 Kings 10:14; 2 Chronicles 9:13).
The Greek word for wisdom is sophia from the word sophos, "wise," and is akin to saphes, "clear." The Greek word for "eye" is ophthalmos. The Greek word for serpent is ophis which is from optomai, "to see," from where we get out words "optometry" and "opthamology." The central idea of this word complex is seeing clearly. The ancients associated the serpent with cunning and wisdom. Greek drakon comes from Greek derkesthai to see, look at.
The serpent said to the woman, "You won't really die. For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened.
The scribes of the New Testament are called grammateus in Greek and soferim in Hebrew from "sphr" to write. The base concept of the Arabic word sifr is "empty" or "zero." A sufi is a Muslim mystic. Our English word "cipher" likely has common roots to this word. The sefirot of Kabbalastic Jewish mysticism also comes from this Hebrew word. It is also known as the "Tree of Life."
During the years between the two Testaments a group of Jewish scribes called Soferim developed rules of how to observe the Law of God. Later in the 1st and 2nd centuries another group of men called the Tannim continued the process until it was written down in 220 A.D. by Rabbi Yehuda ha Nasi. The head of the 71 Sanhedrin and ruler of Israel was called "ha Nasi," the prince. This compilation of the rabbinical oral laws or traditions is also known are the Oral Law. The oral law (Mishna) was the authoritative source of halacha or Jewish law, supposedly second only to the Bible itself.
The word tannim is the Old Testament word for the serpent-dragon. It was also an euphemism for Egypt typified in the Pharaoh's Cobra headdress.
Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, "When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, `Work a miracle,' then you shall say to Aaron, `Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh, that it may become a serpent.' " So Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh, and thus they did just as the LORD had commanded; and Aaron threw his staff down before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent. Then Pharaoh also called for the wise men and the sorcerers, and they also, the magicians of Egypt, did the same with their secret arts. For each one threw down his staff and they turned into serpents. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs. (Exodus 7:9-12)
For their rock is not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves being judges. For their vine comes from the vine of Sodom, and from the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of poison, their clusters are bitter; their wine is the poison of serpents, and the cruel venom of asps. (Deut 32:31-33).
You divided the sea by Your strength; You broke the heads of the dragons in the waters. You crushed the heads of Leviathan; You gave him as food for the creatures of the wilderness. (Psalm 74:13-14).
In that day the LORD will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, With His fierce and great and mighty sword, even Leviathan the twisted serpent; And He will kill the dragon who lives in the sea. (Isaiah 27:1).
By His breath the heavens are cleared; His hand has pierced the fleeing serpent" (Job 26:13).
Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; Awake as in the days of old, the generations of long ago. Was it not You who cut Rahab in pieces, Who pierced the dragon? (Isaiah 51:9).
You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. (John 8:44).
But when the Pharisees heard it they said, "It is only by Be-elzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons." Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, "Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand; and if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself; how then will his kingdom stand? And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. Or how can one enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house. He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. And whoever says a word against the Son of man will be forgiven; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. "Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. You brood of vipers! how can you speak good, when you are evil?(Matthew 12:24-34).
You are sons of those who murdered the prophets. Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. (Matthew 23:31-35).
Also called Naasseni and Naasites, a collective name for several Gnostic sects which regarded the serpent as the image of creative wisdom. The name may come from the Hebrew word nachash, serpent. The Greek word for serpent is ophis. Such sects existed within Judaism probably even before the rise of Christianity; and as there were Ophites who rejected the Gospels it would be proper to make a distinction between Jewish, Christian, and anti-Christian Ophites were not the sources, which are all post-Christian, too confused to admit of even approximately positive discriminations.
Irenæus, who, toward the end of the second century, wrote a history of heresy, did not know the Gnostics under the name of "Ophites"; but Clement ("Stromata," vii. 17, § 108) mentions beside the "Cainists" (see Cain) the "Ophians", saying that their name is derived from the object of their worship. Philaster, an author of the fourth century, places the Ophites, the Cainites, and the Sethites at the head of all heresies (ch. 1-3), because he holds that they owed their origin to the serpent (the devil). The Ophites, Cainites, Sethites, Naasseni, etc., declared the serpent of paradise to be wisdom itself (Sophia), since wisdom had come to the earth through the knowledge of good and evil which the serpent had brought. Hence they exalted Cain and Seth, who they held were endowed with this knowledge, as the heroes of the human race; other Gnostics regarded Esau, Korah, the Sodomites, and even the traitor Judas, as tools of Sophia; whereas Jacob and Moses, for instance, who were the instruments of the Creator (Demiurgus), were regarded as being inferior (Irenæus, "Against Heresies," i. 31, § 2). All Ophistic circles believed in a demonic hebdomad (i.e., seven spirits under the dominion of the serpent) side by side with the holy hebdomad under Jaldabaoth. The last-mentioned is the son of fallen wisdom ("yalda bahut" = "son of chaos"), and from him proceeded, in successive generations, Jao (), Sabaot, Adoneus, Elœus, Oreus ("or" = "light"), and Astaphæus, which are said to be manifestations of the God of the Old Testament. The Ophites claimed that Moses himself had exalted Ophis by setting up the serpent, and that Jesus also had recognized it.
The Naasseni went even further, and the retention of the Hebrew name shows that their belief represents the oldest stage of the heresy. "Whoever says that the All proceeded from the One, errs; but whoever says, from Three, speaks truth and can explain the All. The first of these three is the blessednature of the sainted higher man, Adamas [strangely explained as "diamond"]; the second is the death below; the third is the unruled race that had its origin above, and to which belong Mariam, 'the sought one', Jothar (Jethro), the great sage, Sepphora, the seeing one, and Moses." The three words "Kavlakav," "Savlasav," and "Zeer Sham" (taken from Isa. xxviii. 10), they declare, indicate Adamas above, death below, and the Jordan flowing upward (Hippolytus, "Philosophumena," v. 8), and present the threefold division of the realm of blessedness or immortality which forms a part of all Gnostic heresies—the world of spirits, the corporeal world, and redemption. The "Naas" is the primal being and the source of all beauty (ib.v. 9)—the spiritual principle. Side by side with it exists chaos, or matter. The human soul leads a troubled existence between chaos and spirit until redeemed by Jesus.
The mysterious diagram of the Ophites is famous. Celsus and his opponent Origen ("Contra Celsum," vi. §§ 24-38) both describe it, though not in the same way. Celsus maintains that there were circles above circles; but Origen maintains that there were two concentric circles, across the diameter of which were inscribed the words ΠΑΤΗΡ ("father") and ΓΙΟC ("son"); a smaller circle hung from the larger one, with the words ΑΓΑΠΗ ("love"). A wall divides the realm of light from the middle realm. Two other concentric circles, one light and one dark, represent light and shadow. Hanging from this double circle was a circle with the inscription ΖΩΗ ("life"), and this enclosed two other circles which intersected each other and formed a rhomboid. In the common field were the words ΣΟφΙΑC ΦγCΙC ("the nature of wisdom"), above ΓΝΩCΙC ("cognition"), and below ΣΟΦΙΑC ΠΩΟΝΟΙΑ ("knowledge"); in the rhomboid was ΣΟΦΙΑC ΠΩΟΝΟΙΑ ("the providence of wisdom"). There were altogether seven circles, with the names of seven archons: Michael, in the form of a lion; Suriel, of a bull; Raphael, of a dragon; Gabriel, of an eagle; Thauthabaoth ("Tohu wa-Bohu"), of a bear's head; Erataoth, of a dog's head; and Onoel or Thartharaoth, of an ass's head. The archons are perhaps identical with the above-mentioned seven generations of Jaldabaoth. They signify the corporeal world, which follows the middle realm, and with which the dominion of Sophia ends. The hexagram (Shield of David) of the Jews, whose thought was not always foreign to Gnosis, may be in some way connected with this diagram. But the serpent as symbol is found likewise in connection with the mysteries of Egypt, Greece, Phenicia, Syria, and even Babylonia and India. For the Jewish elements in this strange Gnostic lore See Cabala, Name and Origin.
("Ophists", Jewish Encyclopedia)
The head of the Jewish Sanhedrin was called the Nasi which means "Prince." One cannot help here but think of Hitler's regime written in German as "Nasi" and the Jewish Holocaust. It comes from the Hebrew word nasa. which means "to lift up. See John 3:14; 12:32. The word Nazarite is Hebrew nazir and means consecrated/separated one coming from the word nazar, "to dedicate, consecrate."
The word "Pharisee" means "separated one." It is apparently from the Aramaic word for "separate" and Hebrew word parash, distinct, separate, distinguished. It is interesting tha this Hebrew word also means to "pierce/sting" and "scatter." Whether or not it is relevant, it is also interesting that the Greek word aphorizo which sounds related and means "separated from" implying boundaries as also in the Law, and the Greek word pharisaios sounds like "apart from heresy," (apo + hairesis) which would literally mean "a separated sect" or "to choose to be separate."
The word "kabbalah" (variously spelled) means "received/traditional lore." It is the basis of Jewish Gnostism and the privileged few who have its knowledge are "the elect." The kabbalah is styled as "the hidden wisdom" and those who master it are called maskilim (the wise), after Dan. 12:10. The Kabbalah was understood to be like the Mishnah but only entrusted to a privileged few, a secret priestly society.
There is some evidence the Essenes may have been the privileged society who kept the hidden wisdom. The roots of Kabbalah seem to have originated before Christ. IV Esdras xiv. 45-46 shows an instruction to publish the twenty-four books of the canon openly that the worthy and the unworthy may alike read, but to keep the seventy other books hidden in order to "deliver them only to such as be wise" for in them are the spring of understanding, the fountain of wisdom, and the stream of knowledge. The foundation of Kabbalah is seen in Apocalyptic literature such as the Book of Enoch and the Book of Jubilees. In the Book of Jubilees, Levi is described as the guardian of the ancient secrets and describes a very Gnostic sounding a cosmogony based upon the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. The Pythagorean idea of the creative powers of numbers and letters is here proved to be an old kabbalistic conception. The belief in the magic power of the letters of the Tetragrammaton and other names of the Deity seems to have originated in Chaldea. The whole dualistic system of good and of evil powers, which goes back to Zoroastrianism and ultimately to old Chaldea, can be traced through Gnosticism; having influenced the cosmology of the ancient Cabala before it reached the medieval one. So is the conception underlying the kabbalistic tree, of the right side being the source of light and purity, and the left the source of darkness and impurity. Speculative Kabbalistic thought seems to have then taken root with Alexandrian Jews which is perhaps why the Christians Alexandrian school run by Clement and Origen were strongly allegorical.
A Palestinian Midrash of the fourth century asserts that three of the elements—namely, water, air, and fire—existed before the creation of the world; that water then produced the darkness, fire produced light, and air produced wisdom ("air" = "wisdom"), and the whole world thereupon was made by the combination of these six elements.

Jesus and the Serpent
The word nachash is akin to the Hebrew words for bronze and divination.
The LORD sent fiery (saraph) serpents (nachash) among the people and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. So the people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned, because we have spoken against the LORD and you; intercede with the LORD, that He may remove the serpents (nachash) from us." And Moses interceded for the people. Then the LORD said to Moses, "Make a fiery serpent (saraph), and set it on a pole; and it shall come about, that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, he will live." And Moses made a bronze serpent (nachash) and set it on the pole; and it came about, that if a serpent (nachash) bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent (nachash), he lived. (Numbers 27:6-9).
Hezekiah removed the high places and broke down the sacred pillars and cut down the Asherah. He also broke in pieces the bronze serpent (nachash) that Moses had made, for until those days the sons of Israel burned incense to it; and it was called Nehushtan. (2 Kings 18:4).
As Moses lifted up the serpent (ophis) in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. (John 3:14-15).
Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all unto me. This he said, signifying what death he should die. (John 12:30-31; cf. 16:11 compare 14:30 and Acts 2:24).
I came to cast fire upon the earth; and would that it were already kindled! I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how I am constrained until it is accomplished! (Luke 12:49-50; cf. Luke 3:16-17; Acts 2:4).
For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: sending his own Son in the likeness of the flesh of sin and concering sin, he judged sin in the flesh. (Rom 8:3; cf. 1 Pet 4:17).
For we know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. (Rom 6:9-10; cf. 2 Cor 5:221).
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil. (Hebrews 2:14).
Precession of the Equinox
The earth's pole oscillates back and forth over a period of 26000 years per oscillation. Like a wobbly rotating toy top, the direction of the rotation axis executes a slow precession with a period of 26,000 years. The sun rises through each constellation of the Zodiac over this 26,000 year period.
Over the past two thousand years or so the sun has been rising at the Spring Equinox in the constellation Pisces. However, the sun will soon be soon be rising in Aquarius. The Greek word for fish is ichthus which was an anacronym built from the Greek words Iesous Christos Theos Huios Soter, "Jesus Crhist Son of God Savior." The sign of Aquarius is the water-bearer which is represented in the Gospels as the man who furnished Jesus and the 12 with the Upper Room.
The earth's north pole now points at the star Polaris, the North Star. However, this was not always true. As the pole wobbles it points in a different direction over the 26000 year period. If the earth's north pole was a pencil, it would draw a circle around a constellation in the sky called "Draco" during the 26000 years. This is the dragon constellation also known to the ancient Jews as "Leviathan.
Ouroboros - World Tree Serpent
In the Bible, the serpent seduces Eve into eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. This tree is in the middle of the Garden along with the Tree of Life. We see here an allusion to the "world tree" concept of the ancient people throughout the world. Perhaps we can surmise that one tree is symbolic of the earth's north-south poles and the other represents the earth's magnetic poles. I believe the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil to be symbolic of the earth's magnetic poles and these poles have opposing polarity like Good and Evil.
Kundalini is derived from the Sanskrit term which means "coiled up." It is the primordial dormant energy present in three-and-a-half, coils at the base of the spine in a triangular bone called the Sacrum. The Latin name ‘Os Sacrum’ suggests that it is a holy or sacred part of the body. The ancient Greeks were aware of this and therefore they called it the ‘Hieron Osteon’, noting that it was the last bone to be destroyed when the body is burnt, and also attributed supernatural powers to it. Egyptians also held this bone to be very valuable and considered it the seat of special power.
The Kundalini, which is to nourish the tree of life within us, is coiled up like a serpent and therefore it has been called, ‘The Serpent Power’. It has been described in great detail in the Upanishads.
The Spinal Cord is a bundle of nerves that act as the "main cable," carrying both sensory and motor information between the body and the brain. There are 30 pairs of spinal nerve roots, which branch off the spinal cord and exit through the intervertebral foramina between each vertebra. They transmit sensory and motor impulses to and from parts of your body so that you can feel sensations and move your body. They operate much like electric cables.
Many Gnostics (especially the followers of Valentinius) taught that there was the One, the original, unknowable God (the Monad as it is called by Monoimus, or the first Aeon); and then from the One emanated other Aeons, pairs of lesser beings in sequence. Valentinius listed 30 such pairs. The Aeons together made up the Pleroma, or fulness, of God. The lowest of these pairs were Sophia ("Wisdom" in Greek) and Christ. In the Gnostic creation myth, Sophia sought the unknowable One, being so distant from her.
The human body is a world of its own. Like the earth it is 70% water and our passions cause our seas to rage. Our spine is our "world tree."
Let not many of you become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we will incur a stricter judgment. 2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. 3 Now if we put the bits into the horses' mouths so that they will obey us, we direct their entire body as well. 4 Look at the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. 5 So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! 6 And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. 7 For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by the human race. 8 But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. (James 3:1-7).
Pharaoh and Egypt euphemistically referred to as the Serpent Rahab depicted in the ouroboros crown. Ra is "evil" in Hebrew. The Cobra symbolized the eye of Ra the Egyptian sun God. Osiris is depicted symbolically as an eye. Recall that the Greek word for serpent is derived from the Greek word to see clearly alluding to wisdom. Note US dollar bill.

The Number 37
If we imagine that the point of the triangle or pyramid is a portal into another dimension such as eternity we can give it the value of "0." In the same sense, 0 is the starting point of creation and also the emptied condition of Christ's death prior to God filling him with glory in his resurrection. Hence, the triangular of 36 + 0 equals 37 digits.
0 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4... ... + 34 + 35 +36 = 666
It is important to recognize that ancients often view everything as the "all." Hence, everything is a fraction of the one.

Carbon - the Number of the Man of Dust
Carbon is the Sixth element. It has 6 protons, 6 neutrons and 6 electrons. I is the basic element of living matter. It is also the chief element of oil, decayed aquatic life. The crystal structure of Carbon is hexagonal. Diamonds are made of carbon.
I surmise the bronze serpent represents the power of the earth's magnetic poles. As this seems related to gravity it is also likely thought to be the power of death and Hades in the ancient mind. Since the earth's poles circle around Leviathan, the Devil holds this power of death.
Dec 21, 2012 must be determined as paralleling Jesus' baptism OR his death.
After the return from captivity in Babylon, Ezra the Scribe set up what was known as the School of the Sophim. This was to teach the scribes that Law so they could teach the people so that they would know the Law and obey it. However the generation that followed Ezra began to teach that they must build a fence around the Law of rules and regulations, the thought being that the people might then back the fence about the Law but not brake the Law itself. When all the scribes and later the rabbis agreed on a new rule or regulation it became binding. After the Sophim came the Tannim in the first century CE. They did the same thing but added one point. All that processed them that was done by the Sophim was made equal in authority to the Hebrew Scriptures. They and then later the Gemara added hundreds of new laws, rules and regulations. This later became known as the Talmud. One illustration of what they did with the 613 Laws of God. There is one that says, “Thou shalt keep the Sabbath day holy”. Meaning that no work was to be done on the Sabbath. Over the course those years as the fence was build around that Law, in the Talmud, by added 1500 new laws, rules and regulations to God’s one Law. They did this with all of the 613 Laws of Moses given at Mt. Sinai.
Legend has it that in the banquet after Armageddon
In Christian apocalyptic literature (the Book of Revelation), Armageddon is the site of the final battle between the kings of the earth (incited by Satan) and the Christian God. The term is also used for the battle itself, or more broadly for an Apocalypse.
The Christian concept extended upon earlier Jewish traditons, with the location for the battle being moved from the Vale of Ghosts (Emeq Refaim) near the Temple Mount in Jerusalem.

and the ziz The ziz is a giant bird in Jewish mythology, said to be large enough to be able to block out the sun with its wingspan.
According to Hebrew tradition, the meat of this bird will be served as a meal, along with the behemoth and the leviathan, in the banquet at End Times. The Persian Simurgh, which is arguably a fifth accompaniment to the Kar, the Khara, the Hadhayosh, and another bird, the Chamrosh, has been said to be equated by the rabbis with the ziz, their three future-meal giant animals corresponding to the archetypal creatures of Persian mythology. The trio of behemoth, leviathan and ziz was traditionally a favorite decoration motif for rabbis living in Germany.

Androgynous traits are those that either have no gender value, or have some aspects generally attributed to the opposite gender. Physiological androgyny, dealing with physical traits, is distinct from behavioral androgyny which deals with personal and social anomalies in gender.
The morpheme andr- means 'man', and the morpheme -gyn- means 'woman'.

In European mythology, a dragon is a serpent-like legendary creature. The Latin word draco, as in the constellation Draco, comes directly from Greek drakones. The Dragon is sometimes known by the Nordic word, ormr (Old English wyrm). Though a winged creature, the dragon is generally to be found in its chthonic lair, a cave that identifies it as an ancient creature of earth, like the mythic serpent, that was a source of knowledge even in Eden..

There are 12 houses of the Zodiac. Each constellation then consists of 30 degrees of the 360 degree circle. It takes 72 years to move one degree in the precession of the equinoxes. This would be one "day" in the Great Year. 72 is a very important number in mysticism. There were for example 72 assassins who assisted Set in the murder and desecration of the body of Osiris, the Egyptian dying and rising god. Mason legend says there were 72 masons who built the tower of Babel, resulting in the 72 tongues of 72 nations spread throughout the world. Jesus sent out the 72 to preach the gospel in addition to his 12. The most important occurrence of this sacred number is the 72 archons that are relayed to us through Gnosticism, who are celestial spirits that govern the motion of the stars. The Gnostics may have derived their knowledge of these star-spirits from the Orphic Mysteries, and most importantly, from the Mysteries of Mithras. The Sanhedrin, the Jewish council, had Jesus assassinated. They were 72 in number. They represent God's heavenly council of angels, spirits, established to rule over the cosmos and how have fallen into disrepute. 72 is also half of 144.
70, 71, 72
The number 72 is based on a 360 day year. However, if we were to compute the same concept on a 365.25 day year the number is closer to 71.
There were seventy nations dispersed at Babel. (Genesis 11).
Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons in all, and now the LORD your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven. (Deuteronomy 10:22).
Then they came to Elim where there were twelve springs of water and seventy date palms, and they camped there beside the waters. (Ex 15:27).
They journeyed from Marah and came to Elim; and in Elim there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there. (Numbers 33:9).
Then He said to Moses, "Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu and seventy of the elders of Israel, and you shall worship at a distance....Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. (Exodus 24:7-9).
The LORD therefore said to Moses, "Gather for Me seventy men from the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and their officers and bring them to the tent of meeting, and let them take their stand there with you.... So Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD. Also, he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and stationed them around the tent. Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him; and He took of the Spirit who was upon him and placed Him upon the seventy elders. (Numbers 11:16-26).
The Sanhedrin had 70-72 elders.
Jesus sent out 72 disciple evangelists.
