The Mission Statement

Placed on your resume, a mission statement can be a very powerful and effective resume response tool. It can push the employer's hot button and generate more job interviews and job offers!

  • A mission statement is a short, clear, written declaration combining
one's motivation (no, not the salary), principles and targets.
  • Everyone's mission statement will be different from everyone's
else's; your mission statement will be unique, customized to
    fit and represent only you.
  • It is NOT the same as the "Job or Career Objective" on your
resume. The mission statement replaces it.

example: here is an example of the old, outmoded and overused job/career objective on a resume versus the "new" resume mission statement .....

old: "my objective is to get a job with a financially secure organization where I can use my skills/experience to advance my career".

new: "my objective is to work in the genetics industry investigating, researching and discovering the root causes of illnesses so I may help find cures for those afflicted".

The mission statement is a lot more dynamic. Which job applicant sounds more career directed? Goal directed? More motivated? Assuming they both had equal work experience, which one has the better chance of getting a stronger, faster response - a wow response - to his or her resume? Given a similiar work history, which one is more likely to get an invitation for an initial interview ?

And even if you don't put a job/career objective on your current resume, if you want more responses to your resume, add a mission statement!

Don't worry, instructions on how to create your own mission statement are included - absolutely free - further down the page. Keep reading ...

Why is a mission statement appropriate for me?
Anyone who wants to can use a mission statment; you just have to create one that's correct and that fits you. A mission statement is appropriate for individuals seeking work, career change, re-entering the work force, entering the work force for the first time, etc. A mission statement is appropriate and applicable for any industry, field or organization that it fits.

Do I really need a mission statement?
It's up to you; if you are getting lots of initial interviews and are swamped with good job offers - from organizations you really want to work for - than you probably don't need to consider putting a mission statement on your resume. Otherwise, you should know that in the 21st century nearly every company, organization, association, agency ... (even sports teams!) uses a mission statement. And now it's finding it's way into the hiring process and the resumes of job applicants. A mission statement on a resume can provide employers an important new hiring tool ... one that clearly defines a job applicant's motivation and ethics.

And every legitimate organization wants to hire motivated and ethical people.

Partly as a result of the big accounting scandals of 2002, like Enron and WorldCom, organizations are now even more acutely concerned with management & employee ethics. It's now a smart move to declare on your resume that you are personally serious and ethical about your career. It's becoming the employment industry's new "hot button". Creating a proper mission statement and putting it on your resume could indeed help you

hit the
employer's
hot button

Do you want employers to respond to your resume? Do you want them to look at your resume and say, "Wow, I want to hire this person!"? Show them something to go "wow" about. Wow them with a mission statement! A mission statement can help you get more initial interviews. A mission statement makes your resume stand out from all the other job applicants who don't use one on their resume. A mission statement can turn your resume into a wow resume! So if you are serious about your career - and your resume - it would be wise to immediately update your resume with a mission statement!

Where does the mission statement go on your resume?

It goes right where you used to put your Job or Career Objective (after your name, address, etc. and before your Experience). Yes, you can still put it on your resume as your "Objective" (just enter your mission statement) or, if you are comfortable enough, call it Mission Statement.

The "Experience" section of the resume (where you list your jobs, etc.) remains unchanged.

OK, now you're ready to create your mission statement!
