Seed and love (tennis)



在刚刚结束的澳大利亚网球公开赛中， "seed" 和"love"出现频率颇高，它们已经从"种子"和"爱情"的意思发展成网球场上的专业术语"种子选手"和"零分"的意思。

本以为这两个词在网球场上的意思都来源于英国，其实不然，"seed"是一个地地道道的美国词。最能证明这个词的来源的莫过于《牛津英语词典》里收录的1898年American Lawn Tennis杂志（《美国草地网球》杂志）中的一句话： "Several years ago, it was decided to 'seed' the best players through the championship draw in handicap tournaments so that the players in each class shall be separated as far as possible one from another."

"Love"用作"零分"的意思要追溯到17世纪的短语 "play for love" , 它的意思是"to play without any wager, for nothing" （没有任何赌注的游戏），从此"love"就有了"nothing"这个意英语思， 进而引申到网球比赛中，一些牌类游戏和英国的足球解说中也沿用了这一说法。在英式英语中，零比零的比赛标准的说法是 "love-all"。
