Make no bones

据考证，对这个短语的来源有两种说法，两种说法都和"bone" (骨头)有一定的联系。一种说法是说，从前骰子都是用骨头做的，14世纪以后，俚语中"bone" (骨头)就代替了 "dice"(骰子)，如果说一个人"make no bones"，就是说他没花什么力气去做骰子。

另一种说法是"make no bones"最初是由 "find no bones"发展来的，"bone"是指汤里的骨头。如果汤里没有骨头，就能很顺畅的把汤喝下去。下面我们来看15世纪一封信中句子, "…and fond that tyme no bonys in the matere." 从上下文中我们可以看出作者在此用 "find no bones"表达对谈论的话题没有异议或反对意见。Skelton在他的作品中有这样的话， "Supped it up at once; she found no therein no bones" 作者表达"她毫不犹豫地同意了"的意思。到16世纪，"find no bones"逐渐转化成"make no bones"，例如在Marbeck的 Book of Notes一书中，他这样写道： "Whatsoever matter is interested of, they never make bones in it."

至于"make no bones"又如何发展了"毫不隐讳的直言"的意思， 并没有很清楚的记载。可能是因为如果你对一件事没有任何反对意见，你就不会吞吞吐吐的表达自己的意见，更不会掩饰自己的真实想法，例如，1955年Bulletin of Atomic Science杂志上有这样的句子， "…Dr. Libby makes no bones about the catastrophe of a nuclear war."（利比博士直言了核战争的毁灭性后果）； 在体育新闻的标题中也常常出现这个短语，如"Make No Bones About It, Osteoporosis Strikes All"（Osteoporosis 无疑将战胜一切）。

"Make no bones"的肯定形式"make bones"的说法虽然不常见，但也并不是没有这种用法。Richard Simpson 在他的The School of Shakespeare 一书中写道， "Elizabeth was thus making huge bones of sending some 7000 pounds over for the general purposes of the government in Ireland," 这里 "making huge bones"显然是指Elizabeth强烈反对拨款这件事。
