About Me

About Me…
I am the mother of 4 children (okay, so 2 are adults). They are 25, 20, 7 and 4 years old. I also have two (soon to be three) grandchildren. I had the priviledge of watching my 2nd grandbaby come into this world and it was incredible!

Personal Birth Experience…
My first birth was in1977 in a military hospital. I was under the impression that they would tell me what to do when I got there. Needless to say it was not an ideal birth. I went to the other end of the spectrum for the next baby and had a wonderful homebirth. After a 13 year break I went on to have 2 natural hospital births with midwives.

Why I Became A Doula…
I have always been a "birth junkie". Becoming a doula was an outlet for this passion. During my homebirth my cousin never left my side and I felt like I wouldn't have been able to even breathe if I wasn't looking into her eyes. It's her support of me that I so vividly remember during that birth. That is what I want to do for other women.

My Training…
Initial doula training from DONA was in July 2000 . Accomplished my certification through DONA in Dec 2000. Audited Lamaze Chiildbirth Education Classes and attended breastfeeding and mother infant classes. Attended a training seminar through CAPPA in Nov 02. I continue daily to expand my knowledge through books, articles and the internet. I participate in an email group consisting of 700 doulas from around the world and reap the benefit of their personal experiences.

  My Experience…
So far I have attended about 20 births, which have included both home and hospital births at Children's, Sisters, Mercy and Millard Fillmore Suburban.

My Philosphy on Birth…
Birth is a natural, life altering process. It is meant to be empowering. I have great respect for the differences in women's needs and believe in unconditional support. The most important part of my work is done prenatally with moms. As long as women have good evidence based information they know what is best for them and I want to help them attain that.
