NEW TESTAMENT EXEGESIS INSTRUCTIONS

Carefully follow the procedures outlined below.  You will complete the exegesis in three stages, the next stage following the successful completion of the previous stage.  The due dates for each stage are indicated.  You may work in advance of the due dates if you prefer.

STAGE 1 (DUE MARCH 17)

  • Choose a pericope (brief passage).  Several possibilities are listed below.
  • Read you pericope carefully three times.
  • After you read the first pericope, make notes of the details.  Note the characters, the sayings, and each event.
  • Review notes until you can remember the details of each passage by memory.
  • Write a synopsis of the passage, noting the significant details.  Don't just note the details one after the other.  Bring out whatever significance you can see as you begin the project.

  • STAGE 2 (DUE TUESDAY, MARCH 22)
  • Note the context of your passage.  What is happening immediately preceding and following your pericope. Is the more general context (the surround chapters) significant in understanding your passage?
  • Check the information in your book that deals with the book from which your passage comes. Read this information carefully.  Apply this knowledge to your interpretation.  There will be other significant information about the book in the introductory sections of THE INTERPRETER'S BIBLE.
  • Write any new insights you have had into the meaning of your pericope.

STAGE 3 (DUE TUESDAY, APRIL 12)
  • Go to the commentaries listed below.  Look up your verses.  The commentaries should give you some additional information for interpreting your pericope.
  • If there are any parallels to the message in your pericope in any other part of the New or Old Testaments bring these into the picture.
  • Write a final paper that adds any new perspectives you have had and brings together you understanding.  In other words, explain meaning of the terms, persons and themes you discovered in STAGE 1 of the assignment from your new height of understanding.
  • May the Holy Spirit enlighten your heart and mind.
