In The Gambia, poverty is everywhere. Almost half of the people living in the rural areas are in poverty. The majority of the people who are poor depend on agriculure to make a living. Falling market prices mean that households have less money to meet basic needs. The main causes of poverty include the following: low and decreasing soil fertility due to erosion. Poorly functioning input and output markets, low agricultural and labor productivity and desertification also play a part.
