The Gambian government helps keep the laws and roles for the people. The Gambia was a British colony for 200 years until it reached sovereignty on February 18, 1965. The Executive Presidency was established in 1970. It was revoked following the July 1994 military coup. The constitution of The Second Republic of The Gambia was approved on August 8, 1996 and became effective January 16, 1997.

Legislative power for The Gambia is held in the National Assembly. This assembly has 53 members, 48 of which are elected and five are appointed by the President. They serve a five-year term.

The Executive power is held by the President. He is also the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. He serves a five-year term and is elected by national vote. He also appoints a vice-president.

The Judiciary System of The Gambia is similar to common law jurisdiction. The courts are: The Khodis Courts, District Tribunals, and Magistrates. they also have a Supreme Court and The Gambia Court of Appeal.
