Magpies Magic!

Newcastle United 13 Newport County 0
October 5 1946

UNITED'S record scoreline came at St. James' Park on an amazing afternoon back in 1946.

It's unlikely the scoreline will ever be bettered in modern-day football, and even though United have scored up to seven goals in a game on several occasions over the last few years they've never come close to equalling this one.

United had signed Len Shackleton from Bradford before the game, and he enjoyed a dream debut by helping himself to a double hat-trick.

There was no sign of things to come when Charlie Wayman missed a penalty with just 90 seconds gone, but he made up for his error by heading Newcastle in front from Shackleton's cross.

Shackleton then bagged his first goal shortly afterwards before seeting up two chances in quick succession to allow Wayman to complete a hat-trick.

Shack then needed less than two minutes to find the net three more times before the break to take his tally to four and united's to seven.

There was no let-up after the interval, Shackleton made it 8-0 with his fifth, then Milburn scored a brace to take the scoreline into double figures.

The poor Welshmen had no answer to the magical Magpies, and after Wayman made it 11-0 with his fourth, Roy Bentley got in on the act to make it 12 and who else but Shackleton wrapped it up at the death to send the 52,137 Geordies home happy.

United: Garbutt, Cowell, Graham, Harvey, Brennan, Wright, Milburn, Bentley, Wayman, Shackleton, Pearson.
