Rabbits by Angelia Pilon

I chose to do my report on rabbits because I wanted to learn more about them. I really
enjoyed doing this report, rabbits are very interesting animals. I spent alot of time on
my Daddy's computer just searching for rabbits. I found so much information and alot of pictures.
Most rabbits live in underground burrows. The burrows are connected by tunnels underground to form
communities called warrens. The cottontail rabbit does not dig burrows, it makes a nest in tall grass and thick shrubs.
Rabbits can't see very good in bright sun. They are nocturnal animals, which means they usually sleep during the day and
are awake at night.
Rabbits are also herbivores. This means they only eat herbs, tree bark, and vegetables. They love to raid
gardens for radishes, carrots and lettuce.
Rabbits have a very good sense of smell and excellent hearing. They can hear or smell enemies from far away.
Enemies of rabbits include foxes, badgers, hunters, owls and eagles.
Rabbits have large front teeth, short tails and most have long ears. They also have large hind legs and feet for hopping
and jumping. A rabbit can hop about 35 miles an hour.
Rabbits have litters of three to eight babies, and have four to eight litters a year. Rabbits weigh from about
2 to 11 lbs and are about 12 to 24 inches long. A rabbit lives 6 to 8 years. The oldest rabbit known was
15 years old.
North American rabbits are brown, gray, black and white. The color of a rabbit's fur matches the area it lives in.
In the winter their fur turns white like the snow. This helps protect them from their enemies.
Rabbits are active in winter. They remain in their burrows except to go out and dig in the snow for food.
