LILLE BROR SÖDERLUNDH
1912 - 1957

Bror Axel (Lille Bror) Söderlundh was a Swedish composer and troubador. He composed music for many Swedish films. He also wrote classical music, including the Concertino for Oboe and Strings which has been performed by the conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen. He was born in 1912 in Kristinehamn. In 1929 he moved to Stockholm and studied violin.

Lille Bror Söderlundh grew up in Kristinehamn and Charlottenberg and studied violin for Lars Zetterqvist and Tobias Wilhelmi, 1934 before he entered the Conservatory of Music. He never completed the studies, probably because of the breakthroughs that he received as a ballad singer and composer since he met Nils Ferlin in the mid-1930s, and began composer his poems. Söderlundh was Kapellmeister at Bellmansro 1936-40. In 1940, he worked on the anti-nazi satire performance of Den ökända hästen från Troja (The Notorious Horse from Troy) with Karl Gerhard.

Söderlundh was a versatile musician, who wrote for the revue stage, theater and ballet. He composed music for more than twenty feature films. In a portrait concert in the Concert Hall in 1944 he presented new aspects of his art when songs were mixed with pure instrumental compositions.

1943 moved Söderlundh to Västanvik in Leksand Municipality, where he resided until his death. With artistic intuition, he saw the value in folk music and arranged songs for folk violin ensembles. In 1948 Söderlundh became leader of Leksand male chorus and later Borganäs choir in Borlänge. He wrote pieces for choir with texts by poet Gunnar Bjorling, Anna Greta Wide and Mary Wine. He wrote music for children with Bertil Almqvist. He wrote chamber music for various combinations of instruments and several solo concerts, and became in a member of the Society of Swedish Composers in 1946. He had his breakthrough as a serious composer with Concertio per violino ed orchestra in 1954. He was married to potter and textile artist Lisbet Jobs and they had a son.
