You cannot go across the road to the fence
Without treading on the universe.

- Boris Pasternak, "The Steppe"

A FEW ODD MILLENIA

A few odd millennia
scattered like loose change
on the highway of Time,

stamped with images of
pharoahs, caesars,
kings and presidents,

have lost their glitter
in the inflation of eternity.
Too many waylaid millions

cavort in excitation along side
the road to becoming human
(closed due to earthquake damage).

Again an era is punctual
two thousand or so years
after something or other,

synchronized ingeniously
with precise calculations
almost exactly incorrect

of some birth some time ago
back then as the crow flies
give or take a decade or two.

Pennies and dimes,
centuries and millennia,
scattered on the highway of Time -

with this treasure of Timelessness,
is it even worth one’s while
to stoop and pick them up?
