Welcome to the academy. The purpose if the academy is to provide a test in order for ensigns to become lieutenants. You can start on a ship as an ensign, or pass the academy exam and start as a lieutenant junior grade. There are two exams, the first one is easier, it's to become lieutenant junior grade. The second is harder, but it will promote you to Lieutenant if you pass it.
