By fountain clear, or spangled starlight sheen,
But they do square, that all their elves for fear
Creep into acorn cups and hide them there.

Act II, Scene I
A Midsummer Night's Dream

"boys & girls" was first concieved as a television series for a project Amy did in her Media Studies class in 1998. The opening sequence for the series was shot starring Sarah, Aaron Sinclair, Chris Martin, and Farideh Olsen. Sarnamy decided that they would like to make a short film of the story outside of the school setting. Eventually, the idea turned into a staged production. The script is basically a much-revised version of the initial treatment for the pilot episode.
There are two separate storylines in "boys & girls" which can be essentially divided into the categories "in the apartment" and "in the coffeeshop" with some over-lapping. The apartment in question is that of Violet and Andrew, two musicians who try to make ends meet with mininum wage jobs (and in Andrew's case, one or two of them a week). The other characters "in the apartment" are Jacob, Violet's boyfriend of several months, and Mary, a girl that Violet works with at the video store. Sarah was mainly responsible for this half of the plot. At least two of the characters were based on real people (although it's probably pretty hard to tell which ones at this point).
Amy's focus was more on the "in the coffeeshop" plotline. The characters here are originals of her mind (with a little help from a certain charming Scottish Jedi...er, actor). Angela and Sheumas own a coffeeshop called "boys & girls" where all of the main characters regularly hang out. Other characters to frequent the coffeeshop are Heather, a "stunning" woman who works at a local publishing company, and Gregory, a well-dressed man.
