One Last Time
"Shinji, you're late"... Kaworu says, seeing the approach of Unit-01. "You betrayed me...
you betrayed the trust I placed in you... YOU BETRAYED ME JUST LIKE MY FATHER
DID!!!" Shinji said, closing in on Unit-02. They eventually reached each other and began
to fight, soon thereafter pulling Prog Knives on each other. Shinji's Prog Knife slips off of
Unit-02's, and goes at Kaworu, but is stopped by Kaworu's AT Field. "You have your own
AT Field?!?" Shinji said. "Yes, at least that is what you lilim call this thing. This is the
light of my soul... a sacred territory in which no one may intrude. Aren't you lilim even
aware yet... that your so-called AT Field is merely the wall that incloses every mind that
exsists?" They verbal arguement ensues for a little longer, then Kaworu says "This is
mankind's fate... the thread of human hope is spun with the flaxen soul..."... then employs
the most powerful AT Field ever detected, shutting out ALL of NERV's communications
and scans within the vicinity, making them blind of the events to follow.
Kaworu, Unit-02, and Unit-01 finally reach the bottom of the shaft, and Kaworu turns to
"Heaven's Door". Shinji attempts to stop him in Unit-01, but is again stopped by Unit-02.
Another battle ensues between Unit-01 and Unit-02, and another AT Field is unfolded,
rocking all of NERV once more, and eating through the other AT Field.
Kaworu opens the final locking mechanism on "Heaven's Door" by simply glancing at it,
and enters to see what he believed to be Adam, but soon finds that it is Lilith. At this point,
Shinji defeats Unit-02 and crashes into Terminal Dogma.
Kaworu realizes that merging with Lilith will destroy mankind, as well as Shinji, whom he
loves. He decides to sacrifice himself so that mankind can survive.
Shinji reaches forward and grabs Kaworu, holding him in the palm of Unit-01. The
following dialogue transpires:
Kaworu: "I thank you, Shinji. I wanted you to take Unit-02 from me. Otherwise, with her,
I might have survived much longer."
Shinji: "Kaworu... but, why?"
Kaworu: "It is my destiny to live forever... though my survival will bring final destruction
to the human race. However, it is possible for me to be killed, and whether I live or die
makes no great difference. In truth, death may be the only absolute freedom there is."
Shinji: "What are you? Kaworu, I don't understand what you are talking about Kaworu."
Kaworu: "This is my wish... please... destroy me. Otherwise, you will be destroyed. Only
one life form can be chosen to evade the destruction and seize the future... and you are not
the exsistance which should die. You need the future... it is what you live for. Thank you
Shinji... my life was meaningful... because of you."
Shinji stands in deliberation for a minute and a half, Kaworu held in his palm, silent,
before closing the palm and crushing Kaworu to death.
