Touji Suzuhara is a classmate of Shinji's. When Touji found out that Shinji was the pilot of the Evangelion which caused his sister to be injured in a pile of debris (while fighting the third angel). After Shinji saved him and Kensuke from the fourth angel, he and Shinji became friends. However, it was soon found out that Touji would be the fourth child, and when he was testing his EVA, it turned out to be Bardiel (the 13th Angel). Shinji was forced to destroy the EVA, and in the process, crushed Touji's entry plug without knowing who the pilot was. Touji has a deep brotherly love for his sister and only piloted EVA if his sister would be taken care of in the NERV hospital. In the process of his EVA being destroyed, he lost a leg.
