Husky Humor & Facts
It's a survival necessity for our dogs
If dogs are not enjoyable, they are disposed of. For example they are taken to
the shelter to be "placed" (killed). Dr. Ian Dunbar, a noted canine behaviorist,
says that 50% of all dogs in the US are dead by one year of age.
If the dog can't be walked because he is dragging you constantly, he soon
doesn't go for walks anymore. One option for him to "get exercise" is to
leave him alone in the yard, but then he is likely to dig pits to amuse himself.
Worse yet, he could escape.
Another option, when he has become too destructive to leave outside, is to
banish him to the basement. Since Siberians get bored very easily, it won't
take him long to find ways to amuse himself. For starters, he will chew things
that he shouldn't, such as furniture, paneling, etc. It is at this point that most
owners will say, "That's it! I've had it."
This whole problem could have been eliminated by the use of one simple
word, "follow". It's not rocket science, just a little bit of leadership on the
part of the owner. Once the dog sees his owner as a leader figure, he won't
pull on leash any more, unless given permission to do so.
You may ask me, "How do you know that?" My response is, "I practice what
I preach." None of my four dogs drag me anywhere when we go for walks. They
see me as their leader and show me the respect that I have earned from them.
They know that, as their leader, I will not tell them to do anything that will cause
them harm in any way. All four of them trust me completely. Once you have your
dog's trust and respect, everything else falls into place.
Attending obedience classes is one of the most important steps in your dogs life.
Start at the puppy socialization level and work your way up. It doesn't matter if
you are interested in competitive obedience or not. The more you do with your
dogs, the stronger the bond between you will become.
Since the majority of people work from 9 to 5, quantity time is not always possible.
This is why you have to spend quality time with your four legged friends. There is
nothing more fulfilling than teaching your dog to use his mind; that's what obedience
classes will teach you to do. You don't need to, nor should you, set a scheduled
specified time to do your training.
