Though the family and friends of Mrs. Dr. B. F. Sharpless had realized for some time that there was practically no hope for other than a fatal termination to her illness of almost a year with a complication of diseases, her death on Monday evening last was nevertheless a shock to the community. She was one of Catawissa’s highly respected women, was a member of the M.E. church and was active in the various branches of the church work when her health permitted.
Her age was about 53 years and besides her husband she leaves three sons and a daughter—Edwin B. Sharpless, of Lewistown; District Attorney W.S. Sharpless, of Mifflinville and H. Orton Sharpless and Miss Margaret, of this place; two sisters also survive her: Mrs. George Guinn and Mrs. John Nash, of Sunbury. Hers was the first death in the family.
The funeral will take place this (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o’clock, services at the home, Revs. R.H. Stine and James M. Johnston, officiating, interment in Greenwood cemetery.

Catawissa News Item, Catawissa, PA, Thursday, January 28, 1879
During the past week the grim monster, death, has crept into a number of families in this locality and robbed the family circle of one or more of its members. Mr. William White, an aged and respected citizen of Scott township, died on Sunday last after an lingering illness. Mrs. David B. Wagner, of Hemlock peacefully breathed away her life at an early hour on Monday morning. From Mount Pleasant we learn of the demise of Mrs. John Wanich Jr., who was just in the prime of life. She died on Sunday after a brief illness. In Bloomsburg the hand of death has also been visible. A little child of John Snyder was claimed a victim on Saturday last. On the same day an interesting little girl of Wm. J. Correll went the way of all flesh, and to add to the sad bereavement of those sorely afflicted parents, another was called on the following day. It was really a sad sight to see the lifeless forms of two innocent children lying side by side, but when the two snow white caskets containing two little lifeless bodies were carried into the sick chamber of a fond mother for a last farewell glance, it beggared words of sympathy beyond description. Truly, “in the midst of life we are in death.”

Mrs. Clara Geist Swank
, widow of the late Martin A. Swank, for many years a well known Catawissa merchant, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Frank B. Harder, Philadelphia, last Thursday, following an illness of three months with diabetes. She had been under treatment by a specialist and was able to be up and around the house the day of her death.
Her age was 60 years, 4 months and 18 days. She was a native of Montour township, but the greater part of her life was spent in Catawissa, where she was well known and respected. The family moved to Sunbury eleven years ago. Her many friends were deeply shocked at the news of her death. The pallbearers were H.T. Young, Jno R. Diemer, H.M. Gellinger, David Bibby, L.C. Mensch, Esq. and Josiah Keller.

It is with feelings of unfeigned sadness and sorrow that the people of Jerseytown and his many friends elsewhere learn of the death of Dr. T.J. Swisher. For some time he had been unwell and for a short time recently was seriously ill, but his friends entertained the hope that he might recover. Although he had the best medical care from Dr. Hoffa, of Washingtonville, and a former student of his, Dr. Essick, of Picture Rocks, yet on Thursday night of last week he fell into a deep sleep from which he never awoke, but quietly passed away at 5 o'clock Sunday morning. Dr. Swisher was educated at Dickinson Seminary, Williamsport; was a teacher in the public schools of this county for several years, after which he went west. Returning, he read medicine with Dr. Cotner, of Jerseytown, and received his collegiate training at Jefferson. As a student, he was thoughtful, earnest, persevering and conscientious, manifesting superior judgment and rare common sense. These characteristics continued through his entire life. He commenced the practice of medicine at Jerseytown with his preceptor and continued on his own account almost up to the date of his death. For some time he was an active member of the I.O. of O.F., taking great interest in the order. He was a tender and indulgent father, a kind and affectionate husband, a true and trustworthy friend, a sincere man- having the courage of his convictions, and a devoted, self-sacrificing physician. Scores of persons who have received relief from pain and comfort and encouragement from his official visits bear testimony to the genuine worth of this ever-ready, ever-faithful, ever-sympathetic one whose life was cut short at the age of fifty-three, largely because of his great care for his patients and his fidelity to the profession that his early ambition led him to choose and his manly convictions caused him to follow so faithfully. The funeral services were held at his residence in Jerseytown on Tuesday last Rev. Mr. Decker, of Jerseytown; Rev. Mr. Mase, of Danville, and Rev. Mr. Jameson, of Hughesville, were present. The last named preached an excellent and affective sermon. A large number of mourning friends assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to him who had served them long and well. After the services at the house, silently and sadly they followed to his last resting place, the cemetery at New Columbus. Peace to his ashes.
