Mrs. Elizabeth Roat, wife of James M. Roat of Millville, committed suicide by hanging on Friday last. Mrs. Roat was blessed with two children and at the time of the sad calamity, one of them (a little girl) was present to witness the sad sight of seeing her mother take her own life. During the morning the unfortunate woman had been about her work as usual, when about eleven o’clock she told her little daughter that she would go to the garret and procure a rope from which she would make a swing on the back porch. After returning with the rope and fastening it securely to the timbers above, the little girl remarked, “Mother that rope is too short to make a swing for me.” When immediately Mrs. Roat placed the fatal noose about her own neck and stepped from a chair upon which she was standing and before the neighbors were made acquainted with the fact life was pronounced extinct. Her friends are unable to give any cause for so rash an act on her part.

In Strattanville, Feb. 26, 1860, Mary E. Runyan, aged 5 years and 8 months, daughter of Rev. A.B. Runyan. This interesting little girl, the idol of her parents has gone to the home of the blest. She was ill only about one week, the disease baffling all skill. She endured much from pain and at 20 minutes past eleven o’clock, on Wednesday night, feel asleep in death to awaken in Heaven, by the Savior’s side. Her parents, it may be, loved her too fondly and thus think the ways of Providence are indeed mysterious, yet they can now truly say, we have a treasure in Heaven. Let them still praise a God of Grace, and bless his holy name, for He who gave, had the right to take away. Farewell dear child; we weep over thy grave, we mourn thy death, but we dare not wish the back again. Thou hast exchanged the sorrows and temptations of a sinful world for the blissful delights and inexpressible joys of a happy eternity.
