STANLEY CUP
WILDEST MOMENTS
LONGEST
PLAY:
On March 24,
1936, the Detroit Red Wings and the Montreal Maroons played in the most
exciting and longest NHL playoff game. The game finished at 2:30 in the
morning when the Montreal’s succumbed to the Detroit Red Wings after Mud
Bruneteau scored the game's only goal after 116 minutes and 30 seconds
of overtime with a final score of 1-0.
WACKIEST
MOMENT:
(Contenders:
Boston Bruins and Edmonton Oilers) On May 24, 1988,
in the 4th game of Stanley Cup Final the lights went out at the Boston
Gardens. The Stanley Cup playoff game was cancelled and replayed two
nights later in Edmonton. The Oilers had already won the first three
games by a composite score of 12-6. It looked like the Oilers would get
the chance to celebrate a Cup win away from home after the Game 4. When
the series returned to Edmonton, the Oilers beat the Bruins by 6-3.
MOMENT STILL
CONSIDERED BEING THE UGLIEST:
In a 1976
Stanley Cup playoff game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Toronto
Maple Leafs, Schultz led the NHL in penalty minutes for the fourth and
final time. His 405 penalty minutes that season made him the only player
in NHL history to break the 400-minute mark twice.
RAPIDEST
MOMENT:
On April 17, 1972. Don Kozak of the Los Angeles Kings set an NHL record
for fastest goal from start of playoff game, scoring :06 into the start
of a 7-4 win over Boston, in Game 4 of the Quarter-Finals.
FILTHIEST
MOMENT: 2000-2001
NHL season turned out to be the best season of Colorado Avalanche Shjon
Podein’s career. When the final buzzer declared the end of Game 7,
Podein hoisted Lord Stanley’s Cup high over his head and kissed it. He
was so overjoyed that he wore his sweaty uniform, equipment and skates
for more than 25 hours. He even slept with his equipment on. By the time
he started smelling so bad that he slept on one side of the bed with his
dog in the middle and his wife as far away as possible.
