STANLEY CUP

The Stanley Cup also known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, is awarded annually by the National Hockey League to the champion of its playoff tournament. It's for the Stanley Cup that the professional hockey players compete season after season. The Cup is a symbol of excellence and proud in the world of hockey and has been derived after the name of Lord Stanley of Preston, Governor General of Canada. In 1892, he bought a small gold-plated silver bowl for $50 to award to the finest hockey team in Canada. Since 1893, the Cup has been awarded every year except for 1919 and 2005.  The Montreal Canadiens have won the most Stanley Cups, 24 and the Toronto Maple Leafs come in second with 13 Cup wins. The highest-ranking American team is the Detroit Red Wings with 10 wins.

Currently, the original Trophy has been showcased in a museum and every year its replica is awarded the winning professional team in the league.
