Travel Experience in Sarawak

Getting Started

Sunday 21st Dec 2003
We woke-up very early in the morning, at 4am! But we were very excited to go to Sarawak. Abah already booked 2 taxis yesterday, which would be arrived at 5.30am. Mami and our maid were also busy packing our bags. After taking morning showers, we boarded the taxis to the airport. The AirAsia flight would take off at 7.15am from Senai Airport, JB to Kuching.

Senai Airport

Senai Airport, Peninsular Malaysia's southern-most aviation
facility is one of Malaysia's key airports that offer full-fledged
facilities and services for both passengers and cargo traffic.
Senai Airport is positioned in one of Malaysia's strategic development zones, with a structured highway and proposed railway network, which will eventually stretch to China and access to the modern port facilities of Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Johor Port and Singapore.
In addition, the region's dynamic economic and tourist centres are within a mere four-hour flight radius, reaching out the Hong Kong, North Australia, India, Philippines, Jakarta and Indo China.

While enjoying proximity to these key economic centres, Senai Airport benefits from being located outside the primary commercial centres in the area. As a consequence, it enjoys lower land, labour and logistics cost.

Kuching Airport

We arrived at Kuching International airport at 9.15am.

We cannot find any information on Kuching International Airport at this moment. If u find any info, please let us know.

Rumah Panjang Sedi

Rumah panjang Sedi (Sedi Longhouse) is located beside Sedi's river. There is a road connected the longhouse to towns of Selalang and Roban. Before the road was built, the only way to get into the longhouse is by mean of water transportation. It was 10 years ago, when Anati was 11 months old! Now, she is almost 12.

Nyabor

Nyabor is a small Malay town on the way from Roban to Kabong. Occasionally, we bought our Malay breakfast there.

Kabong

Kabong is a fishing village located at the end of the road. Abah, Lut, Ati, Aqi and Jampong went there just to take pictures (or video u might call) of some Tembakol fish and jetty sceneries.

Sarikei

Sarikei is the nearest town from the longhouse. We have to go through Selalang to get to Sarikei. There are few commercial banks just like in the Semenanjung and wet market for us to get our fresh fish, meats, and vegetables.

Selalang

Selalang is just a small fishing village where we can find Chinese shops and restaurants. There are a mosque, and Balai Polis.

Sibu

After few days stuck in the longhouse, Abah wanted to go to Sibu very badly. We drove family's van to the city via Sarikei and Sungai Rejang. The first thing we did in the city was to have lunch at McDonalds. We went window shopping and bought few toys and magazines. That's it, but it was a nice and worthy trip.

Sibu, located at Latitude 2 degrees 19 North and Longitude 111 degrees 15' East at the confluence of Rajang and Igan rivers, Sibu is some 60 miles from the South China Sea. With the mighty Rajang River - Malaysia's longest river - as its trusted companion and partner in growth, the Sibu of today has seen tremendous growth from the time when it was nothing more than a mud patch.

Grigat

Grigat is also a small fishing village on the opposite direction of Kabong. We bought some fresh crabs. On the way return from the Gergat beach, we stopped over to visit one of our relatives' longhouse. There were some people playing poker for money. Although Abah didn't take any picture of them, he just watched them play.

Feri to Sibu

Just a few video shots from the ferry overlooking the Sungai Rejang dirty river.

Cultural Village

Tucked away on the foothills of legendary Mount Santubong, 35 km away from Kuching is Sarawak's fascinating cultural showcase, the award winning "Sarawak Cultural Village".

Kuching

Kuching, the biggest city in Sarawak and yet has its touch of being a clean and friendly place has much to offer for a relaxing gateway. Whether one is seeking for culture, nature, adventure or a cool refreshing holiday, this is the place. Kuching was named after 'kucing' which means 'cat' in English, is uniquely liven up by statues of cats everywhere, at the intersection, roundabout, and walkway! The biggest statue of a white cat can be seen at Jalan Padungan, greeting visitors and locals with his ever friendly paws gesture and occasionally dressed up for special occasion. E.g: Chinese New Year and Gawai celebration. A Cat Museum is a unique place not to be missed besides the Sarawak Museum that is regarded as one of the best museum in South East Asia. Built in 1891, it houses many fine collections of Borneo archaeological and ethnological artifacts.

In the end

In the end, we were very happy to visit our relatives in Sarawak for almost 2 weeks (21st Dec - 30th Dec 2003). It was almost 11 years since we went there. We stayed comfortably at the longhouse, bought breakfast at Nyabor, sightseeing at Kabong, Gergat, shopping at Sarikei, Sibu and Roban towns. We enjoyed our tour in the Cultural Village, especially the live show. It was wonderful to be home again after living an urban life in JB/KL. Things are just different in Kuching. Captivating us once again with a smile.
