In the time before time, the Eagle People were the mightiest and most graceful of all the People of the Forrest. Once a great old eagle saw a beautiful Indian maiden. Her beauty and courage was like none he had ever seen. The old eagle fell in love with the maiden. He would watch her from the sky and watch over her every day. At night he would roost in a tree just outside of her lodge. The eagle swore his love to the maiden to all the gods. He took an oath to watch over her and protect her. He said that to be with her, he would even become human. The maiden, though she cared greatly for the eagle, could not bear to be the thing that took him from his beautiful sky and his people. She would not return his love believing she would hurt him if she did. The eagle not knowing what to do and never understanding why the maiden could possibly think the sky was more beautiful than she, never left her side. When he finally died, lonely and sad becuse he could not be with the one he loved, his spirit went up to the Great Spirit and pleaded to never be seperated from his one true love. The Great Spirit had pity on the wise old bird and granted him his request. For the rest of the maiden's life the spirit of the eagle was always at her side and in her heart. Once in our lives, if we are lucky, we find a person that loves us as the eagle loved the maiden. Stephanie, you have come into my life and made me whole. You have healed wounds I never thought would heal. The song and music you hear were written for you by me. As the eagle loved the maiden, so my love is for you.
