TEAM REPORT
By Gerry Dulac/Sporting News Chosen Expert

The unexcused absence of WR Plaxico Burress from minicamp allowed No. 5 receiver Lee Mays to get more work at split end. Mays looked good, but he was the early hit of training camp last year before contributing little in the regular season. Mays has good deep speed but doesn't do a good job of getting open or consistently catching the ball.

The team released CB B.J. Tucker, a player it had wanted to look at in camp. He was signed to the 53-man roster in December because the Steelers did not want to lose him off the practice squad to the Saints. But there were six players in front of him, including special teams standout Chidi Iwuoma and Terry Fair, who missed part of 2002 and all of 2003 with an ankle injury.

SAFETIES ANALYSIS

FS Brent Alexander, a four-year Steelers starter, was released to make room for third-year player Chris Hope to start. Hope is fast and powerful and can make more big plays than Alexander. But Hope has played little and needs to get ready in a hurry. The team re-signed SS Mike Logan, a starter last year, to back up both safety positions and be the extra back in the nickel and dime defenses. If Hope does not have a good training camp, Logan could start. The team hopes SS Troy Polamalu, a 2003 first-round pick, can become a dominant player after starting slow last year. The problem at the position is depth: There is none behind Logan.
