"The Project"

Logline: Danny's time machine leads to nothing but trouble.

Set-up: Everything is concurrent with the show, except that Oscar is father to four kids

A couple of days after Christmas Danny and Oscar sat in the living room the younger kids were busy playing with their new toys.

“Dad, would you mind if I moved my computer to the basement. I thought I could use that one room for kind of a workroom. You know kind of my own office.”

“I don’t see why not. Let me get it fixed up first. Ok?”

“Do you mind if I get started?” Dan asked.

“As a matter of fact I do. It’s pretty dusty down there. I don’t want it to trigger your asthma.”

“I’ll be careful I promise.” Danny assured him

Oscar who had been reading the paper and not really paying attention gave Dan a quizzical look from around the paper. “What are you up to?”

“Me, nothing I just want to get started that’s all, the twins and Joey are always coming in my room, I really don’t want them to bother with my computer when I’m not here. They will be here all day now while I’m at school.”

“You do have a point. “ Oscar noted.

“Rudy worked very hard on that. I don’t want them to break it.”

“Ok you go ahead I’ll be down as soon as I make sure the younger kids won’t get into trouble.”

Oscar changed his clothes, and then checked in the twin’s room. They were playing monopoly. ‘That ought to keep them entertained for a while.’ Oscar thought as he stood in the doorway and watched them. “I’m going to be in the basement if you guys need anything. Ok?”

“Ok Dad. “ Marc said throwing the dice. He moved his token around the board.

“Hey!” Matt cried. Th that’s m my r railroad. You owe m me t two hundred d dollars.”

Marc counted out the money and handed it to his brother. “I thought you would at least let me ride for free.”

“E every m man f for himself in m monopoly.” Matt informed him.

Oscar left them playing and went downstairs laughing. ‘What would I do without them’?

Danny had gotten quite a bit done by the time Oscar got down the storeroom in the basement. “This is a nice room.” Oscar said as he helped Danny clean it out. Nothing had been put into the room so it was empty except of course for some dust and spider webs.

It was quite strange, the rest of the basement had stonewalls but this room was finished off with light paneling on the walls. “I’ll see if I can get a large rug to put down on the floor, it might keep the dust down.” Oscar said as they finished.

“Could we go now dad?” Danny seemed anxious.

Maybe he was a little too anxious. “Are you sure you’re not planning something?” Oscar asked. Giving Dan a serious look.

“Only the twins ‘plan’ something” Danny assured him

”When do you start working with Rudy again?” Oscar wanted to know.

“He said I could come in anytime and work on my science project. I’m going to build him a computer like he did for me.” Danny told him.

“What about the time machine? Did you give up on that?” Oscar asked hopefully.

“For now anyway.” Danny said.

“Well I would rather that you not build one.” Oscar explained to him.

“If that’s what you want.” Danny stated, “Can we get my stuff moved down here?”

“I’ll call Steve and see if he’ll help. Maybe he can watch the kids while we go get a piece of carpet.” Oscar continued.

They went upstairs and called Steve. He said they would be right over.

Oscar quickly made lunch for the younger kids and by the time Steve and Jaime arrived they were ready to leave.

“Dan and I are going to go see if we can get a piece of carpet for that room downstairs he wants to move his computer down there. He says he wants his own office.”

“Sounds reasonable.” Steve said. “We’ll start moving everything down there.”

“Thanks you two, we won’t be to long.” Oscar assured them as they went out the door.

After they left Jaime turned to Steve, “What do you suppose he is up to?”

“I wouldn’t have a clue.” He told her. “But he’s up to something you can bank on that.”

Oscar and Danny picked up a cheap piece of carpet from that hardware store and then headed home.

“Good afternoon Mr. Goldman.” The gate guard said as they drove through the gate.

They had to pass another guard as they drove closer to the house. When Oscar said he was beefing up security he meant it. He had twenty-four hour guards surrounding the house at all times. No one was allowed past the gate guard. Unless they had OSI Ids or they were expected.

By the time Oscar and Danny arrived back home, Steve and Jaime had moved everything Danny wanted downstairs.

“Well thanks guys. We got the rug. I’ll go put it down, and then Dan and I can get the room set up.”

“Well we better get going.” Steve said. “We have reservations for dinner.”

The twins were standing at the bottom of the steps. “Ewww!!” they remarked. “A date.” They finished.

“Now knock it off you two.” Oscar scolded.

“Getting into your place isn’t easy anymore.” Steve noted, as they were getting ready to leave.

“You’re the one who suggested I beef up security around here.” Oscar reminded him.

“I’m not complaining mind you just an observation. This whole security system was my idea to begin with. Remember?”

“Yea, I remember.” Oscar said. “You two have a nice dinner.”

“We will. See you later Oscar. Are you sure you can handle everything from here?”

“No problem. See you tomorrow. I’m going back to work in the morning. I have been away too long. Oscar explained.

“See you at the office then.” Steve said as he and Jaime walked out the door.

“I’m going to get started ok dad? Danny said heading for the basement.

“I’d rather you wait Dan. Why don’t we have dinner then we’ll work on it ok?”

“I guess so.” Danny sighed.

Oscar looked at his oldest son. “What is wrong? This isn’t like you. You are usually very understanding?”

“I’m sorry dad. I’m just anxious I guess.” Danny apologized.

“What are you so anxious about? Dan I trust you I trust that you won’t do anything stupid.” Oscar told him. “I don’t know what you’re up to, but you better be careful.”

“Dad, for the last time, I’m not up to anything. I just don’t want anything to happen to that computer. It’s one of a kind well for the moment anyway. I guess that’s what I’m excited about. I want to get back on it and see exactly how it works so I can start the one I’m building for Rudy for my science project.”

“Ok as soon as we finish dinner we’ll get your office set up.” Oscar told him

Danny could hardly concentrate long enough to eat his dinner. Oscar had to tell him twice to sit up and eat. “I feel like I’m talking to Joey. Come on Dan eat you dinner.”

“I’m sorry dad, I guess I have my mind on other things.” Danny explained.

“I wish I knew what that was.” Oscar sighed.

After dinner Oscar and Danny went back downstairs. “I heard you tell Steve you are going back to work tomorrow. “ Danny said.

“Yea I have to get back to the office. Jaime will be here to watch you kids. She would like to get the twins started with school again.”

“That will go over like a lead balloon.” Danny said.

“What do you mean?” Oscar wanted to know.

“The twins aren’t going to want to start back to school.”

“Well we’ll see. Maybe they can just do a little work.” Oscar suggested.

They got everything arranged the way Danny wanted it. “This will be a great office dad, thanks.”

“No problem Dan. Let’s go back upstairs.”

“You go ahead dad, I want to get started.”

“Ok son, just don’t forget bedtime is 9:00 that is if you are riding in with me tomorrow.

“Yea I really want to get started on my science project. I’ll be up in time to go to bed.”

Oscar went up stairs. ‘Now,' Danny thought to himself. ‘If I can just remember exactly the way I had that mapped out on Rudy’s computer.’ Danny began the slow process of redoing everything on his computer.

“Dan it’s after nine. You really need to come up and go to bed.” Oscar said from the doorway.

“Yea dad. I’m coming.” He stood to leave.

“Don’t you need to shut the computer off?” Oscar asked.

“Oh yea, I’m just tired, thanks for reminding me.” Dan flicked the switch and the monitor went black.

Dan could hardly sleep. He crept back down the basement. He turned the monitor back on He re-read everything he had imputed into the computer.

“That’s it that’s everything.’ Danny said to himself He then went back up to bed. He didn’t sleep though.

At breakfast Danny could hardly keep his eyes open. “What’s wrong Dan?” Oscar demanded.

“I didn’t sleep very well last night” Danny responded.

“Why not?” Oscar drilled. He was losing his patience “You went to bed early enough. You are going to tell me what you are up to.”

“Dad really I’m not up to anything.” Dan reassured.

“Then what were you doing on the computer last night when you were supposed to be in bed?”

Dan looked at him. “How did you know?” He wondered.

“You just told me.” Oscar chided. “If you think you are building a time machine you are out of your mind.”

“I told you I put that on hold for now.” Danny explained.

“For some reason I don’t believe you. You are actually planning on going to go through with it? Aren’t you?”

“Yes dad this is something I really want to do.”

"Dan I really wish you wouldn't " Oscar told him.

“Dad, you don’t understand. This is something that is very important to me. I would really like to do it.”

“Dan I’m just concerned about what could happen to you.”

"Don’t worry, if you don’t want me to I won’t. It’s not that important. “I’m building the computer for my science project anyway."

“Ok Dan just drop it then…” He was interrupted when Jaime walked in. “Good morning Jaime.” He turned to Danny “Are you ready Dan?”

“Yea I’m ready. Let’s go.” Danny drank the last of his juice grabbed his books and left with Oscar.

“I won’t be to late tonight Jaime, you don’t need to make dinner. You’re the kids tutor not the cook. Besides I like cooking for the kids.”

“Ok Oscar I’ll let you.” Jaime turned to the kids. “So do you guys feel like doing any school work?”

“I think so.” Marc said.

‘Ok then let’s get started.”

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

On the way into DC Oscar again talked to Danny. “You’re sure you’re out of the notion of building that time machine?”

“I said for you not to worry about it.” Danny stated.

“I can’t help but worry.” Oscar told him.

“Well you don’t need to.”

“I’m going to hold you to that.” Oscar said

“It would be rather interesting though don’t you think?”

“It could be, but I prefer someone else invent a time machine. Look I’m intrigued don’t get me wrong. I think it would be fantastic if you actually could build one. I just don’t want you to get lost in time.”

“I wouldn’t let myself get lost in time. When we get to the OSI let me show you how I have it mapped out maybe you’ll change you mind.”

“I just might at that. Look Dan, I would love to see you build it. I have no problem with that. I just don't know if I want you to test it. Here's the deal. You build it at OSI that way I can keep better tabs on what's going on. Like I said though I don't know if I want you to be the one to test it.”

“That’s not fair dad. You would never take an invention away from Rudy or any other scientist for that matter.

“We don’t have a scientist who is only twelve either Dan. Our scientists are all adults, and if I thought one of them would get hurt I would take them off the project. Dan why are you so adamant about this.”

They were pulling into Oscar’s parking spot at OSI. “What do you mean dad?”

“I mean, why do you really want to do this?” They got out of the car and stated toward the building.

“I just think it would be interesting to see what life was like 100, 200 years ago.” Danny said.

“I don’t buy it.” They walked through the doors. “Before you head down to work with Rudy I think we should have that talk I wanted to have the other night."

They walked into Oscar’s office. Oscar said good morning to Callahan picked up his mail then he and Danny stepped into his inner office.

“Sit down son.” Oscar pointed to a chair. Danny sat down.

“Come on son, I want the truth. Why are you so bent on building a time machine?”

“I told you, I want to…”

“I don’t believe it. Look Dan, I know you and your brothers have had quite a time since you have come here. You were kidnapped, Marc had that horrible accident, Matt was kidnapped, about the only one to come through this with the advantage is Joey.”

Danny looked up at Oscar. “It hasn’t been all peaches and cream has it?”

“You want to tell me what’s going on?” Oscar pleaded with Danny to tell him “What time do you want to go back to?”

“I don’t really know. I'm very interested in history that’s all. That’s why I want to build one”

“I still don’t believe it but at least you told me the truth about what your intentions are. I think Rudy is waiting for you. You go get started on your science project, and I’ll see you at lunch.”

“Ok Dad, see you at lunch.” Danny slowly got up and walked down to Rudy’s office.

“Hi Dan,” Steve said when he met Danny in the hall. “How is everything?”

Danny only shrugged and continued walking down the hall.

Steve walked into Oscar’s office. “What’s with Danny?” He asked.

“He still wants to build that time machine I told him he could as long as he does it here under Rudy's supervision, that way I control the outcome.”

“That sounds pretty reasonable to me. I take it Dan is up set."

“I told him he could build I didn’t say he could test it that’s what he is so upset about.

"I can't say that I blame him" Steve pointed out.

"Well Danny has always been interested in the past, if you ask me that’s the real reason.” Oscar was going through his mail Steve could tell his mind was preoccupied. He got up and decided to see what if any excitement was going on in Rudy’s office.

“Hi Danny. Didn’t expect you quite so early, everything you need is in your office I can’t show you what to do. You have to figure that out on your own.” Rudy told Danny when he arrived in his office. “But before you get started, I have something I want you to do.”

“More data to load?” Danny asked.

“No, your dad asked me to do this some time ago. I have just been afraid to afraid of the results I guess.

“What’s that?” Danny was really curious.

“Your dad asked me to give you an intelligence test.” Rudy walked over to Danny and handed him the test booklet. “We want to know exactly how smart you really are.”

“Ok, how long will it take I have some work to do at home to. I was hoping someone could give me a ride home after lunch.”

“I know you want to get home and play on your computer. Right?”

“Yea right.” Danny said heading into the room Rudy had let him work in.

“It won’t take long.” Rudy assured him. You can work on you science project tomorrow.”

Danny looked through the test booklet ‘This won’t take long’ He thought to himself.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

By the time Oscar came down to take him to lunch, Danny had completed the IQ test He was ready to go home and finish up on the project he was working on in the basement. It was almost ready all he needed was the ‘launching pad’ so to speak He wasn’t quite sure what he was going to use. He would come up with something. ‘Now all I have to do is come up with a good time to go back to.’

"After I test it, then Dad can move it here if he wants." Dan thought to himself.

He had always been interested in the 1930s maybe he would try that out.

“Where are you going Dan?” Rudy asked as Danny started out the door. “I have to well you know.” Danny said. “Tell Dad I’ll be right back.”

Rudy turned to Steve and they started laughing. “Ok Dan I will” He turned to Steve “Yea I know maybe to well.” Rudy said.

Danny headed down stairs. He had to meet with a man about some money. Not ordinary money. The man he was meeting with worked at OSI and was a coin collector.

“Are you sure you want to do this.” The man asked. This money is worth quite a bit especially to a collector like me.”

“Yea I’m interested. How much do you want for it?”

“Well seeing how you are Oscar Goldman’s son, I’ll just give you what ever you think you need. Ok? I don’t understand what you’re going to do with it though.”

“Gee thanks you don’t have to do that.” Danny took about $40 worth and put it in his pocket. And went back up to meet his dad.

“After lunch Russ said he would give you a ride home” Oscar told Danny while they sat in his office eating sandwiches. “I thought you were working on your science project.”

“I’m working on that tomorrow Rudy gave me some IQ test to take I’ve been working on that.” Danny said.

“You mean he finally broke down and gave it to you huh? Rudy said he was almost afraid to test your limit if you have a limit that is.”

“Dad, everybody has his or her limits.” Danny pointed out. And as much as I hate to admit it I do to.”

“Yea you’re probably right.” The phone rang Oscar picked it up. “Yea ok I think he’s ready.” He hung up the phone “Russ is waiting for you.”

“Dad I have a question before I leave. The abstract to the house where did you put it?”

“It’s in the vault here, why?”

“Could I see it please?” Danny asked.

“I guess so, but why?”

“I’m just curious about something.”

“What are you curious about Dan?”

“I don’t know, I would just like to see it. That’s all.”

“Well alright” Oscar went over to the safe in his office and pulled out the abstract to the house. “I still don’t see why you want something like this, but here it is. You can take it home with you. I’ll bring it back tomorrow.

On the ride back to Arlington, Danny quickly looked through the papers that said who lived in the house and when.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

By the time he got home he discovered to his excitement that from 1933 – 1935 the house stood vacant. He would go back to sometime in that time frame.

“Thanks Russ, He handed him the abstract “You can give that back to dad, I was just checking on something. I don’t think he really wanted me to take it.”

“I’ll see that he gets it.” Russ folded it and put it in his pocket.

“Danny walked in the back door and headed straight for the basement. “Hey where’s the fire?” Jaime asked as he whizzed through the kitchen.

“I want to get to my computer.” Danny explained.

“Well ok.” Jaime had just finished cleaning up from lunch she had given the kids the rest of the day off after all it still was the holiday break.

Danny went straight downstairs he still had to come up with something to use to boost him where he wanted to go. Then it hit him.

smdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdmsmdm

Russ arrived back at Oscar’s office He was talking to Rudy and Steve when Russ walked in. “How did Danny do on the test Rudy?” Oscar wanted to know.

“Oscar like I thought he’s off the charts. I would measure his IQ at well over 200 somewhere around 275 280 range would be more like it. He didn’t get one question wrong. Not one.

“You putting me on Rudy. Everyone misses at least a couple “ Steve pointed out.

“Not Danny.” Rudy explained. In fact I think he’s holding back on us. I think he can understand more than English too.”

“You mean he speaks more than on language?” Oscar pressed.

“Yea that’s exactly what I mean.” Rudy said.

“Not to change the subject Oscar but before I forget Danny asked me to return this to you.” He handed him the abstract.

“What’s that Oscar?” Steve asked.

“The abstract to the house. I have no clue why he wanted it.

“I might have a pretty good idea.” Rudy stated. “The abstract tells you who lived in the house and when.”

“So. What good would that do?” Oscar wanted to know.

Well it would also tell you when the house was vacant…”

Oscar called the house. “Jaime drop what ever you are doing go check on Danny

“I’m sure he’s in the basement.

“I’ll be right back” She set the phone down ran down the basement and returned a few seconds later. “Oscar he’s gone!”...

Oscar slammed the phone down startling Rudy and Steve. “He’s gone!!” he shouted. “Let’s go!”

“Where did he go?” Steve asked

“It’s not a matter of where did he go, it’s more ‘when’ did he go.” Oscar pointed out. “I’m sure we’ll find that out when we get to the house.”

“I don’t understand.” Steve said as he grabbed his coat.

“Steve he built the time machine at home using the computer Rudy built for him.”

They rode the elevator downstairs. “I don’t get it “ Rudy continued. “I don’t think he has had enough time to create one.”

“Rudy” Oscar began as the stepped off the elevator “You’re the one that not more than an hour ago told us that Danny had an IQ of almost 300. I don’t think it would take him long at all. Oscar finished.

They got in Oscar’s car and sped to the house. Jaime was waiting for them. “He’s still not there.” She told them “I just checked.”

Oscar, Rudy and Steve ran down the basement. The door to Danny’s ‘office’ was locked. Steve gave it a push and the door opened right up. The computer was humming and the display said it was December 28 1933. Danny had taken Oscar’s electric blanket apart and hooked the coil from inside to the computer.

“We better go after him.” Steve said.

“You’re not going.” Rudy emphasized, “I don’t know what the weather is like. For all we know it could be forty below zero and a blizzard. I think it would be best if you let Oscar and I go. You stay here.

“Look if it’s that cold I’ll come right back.” Steve explained.

“And how do you propose to do that, without Danny. I don’t even know if he knows how he’s going to get back.” Rudy commented.

“Look Rudy I’ll just have to take my chances. I’m not about to let you and Oscar go alone.” Steve continued, “Who knows what you’ll run into. For all I know John Dillinger could be waiting on the other side. And besides that we need you here to run the computer” Steve told Rudy.”

“Ok, I guess your right. I’ll be here when you come back.” Rudy sighed.

Oscar and Steve stood on the blanket Rudy walked over to the computer terminal He wasn’t real sure what to do at first, but he figured all he had to press would be the enter button on the keyboard. He pressed and Oscar and Steve disappeared. “I’ll be hanged. It works.” He said to himself.

December 28 1933

Oscar and Steve found themselves in Oscar’s basement “I guess it didn’t work.” Oscar said.

“Yea, well where’s Dan’s computer and where’s Rudy? Come on let’s look around it doesn’t feel to cold. So I think I’ll be alright.”

“I guess it does work I tell you Steve that boy scares me to death sometimes. I don’t know if I’m ready to be a father to someone as smart as Danny.

“Yea well you better get used to it cause he is your son.” Steve scolded

“I guess your right.” Oscar surmised.

They walked upstairs no one was around. “It’s a good thing no one is home.” Steve said as the stepped outside.’

“No one lives here, the abstract says that form 1933 – 1935 the house was vacant.” Oscar informed him. “That’s why Dan wanted to see the abstract so bad.”

“I get it that way he wouldn’t come to a time when people lived here. How would he explain just appearing?”

“Right” Oscar emphasized. They stepped outside it was cool but above freezing. Steve had nothing to worry about.

Oscar turned to Steve “Do you see anything?” he asked hopefully

“I see some footprints over there.” Steve pointed.

“They could belong to anyone Steve” Oscar sighed

“Shoes that say rebock on the sole?” Steve told him

“Let’s go, follow this prints.” Oscar ordered.

They followed the prints into town. Well it wasn’t much of a town. It was more like a shopping area just outside the city of Arlington.

“Let’s check in there.” Steve pointed to a small general store. “Do you have a picture of Danny?”

“Of course I do. Why?”

“We’ll show it to the owner of the store maybe Danny came in here.”

They walked into the store. Oscar walked up to the man behind the counter. “Can I help you gentlemen?”

“I’m looking for my son. He sort of ran away from home.” Oscar informed him.

“There was a young boy in here just a little while ago. About twelve years old.”

Oscar showed the man Danny’s picture.

“That would be him.” The man said.

“Where did he go?” Oscar asked.

“I gave him directions to a boarding house just up the road a ways.” The owner of the general store told them.

“Thanks” Oscar said.

They walked the short distance to the boarding house. A young woman opened the door. “Sorry.” The woman said. “We have no more rooms I just rented the last one.”

“To a boy?” Steve asked.

“That’s right.” She stated.

Steve showed her the picture. “This boy here?” Steve asked.

“Yep that’s him.’ She stated.

“Well he is my son. We need to take him home.” Oscar explained.

“Well he’s not here right now. He gave me money for a couple of nights then he said he was going to take a walk.”

“Did you see which direction he went?” Steve wondered. You see he ran away form home and we really want to take him back.”

“He went toward the park.” The woman told them.

“Thanks.” Oscar said.

They headed down the street to the park. Steve searched and searched but he could not see Danny anywhere.

“What if something happened to him? What if John Dillinger did come to town to rob a bank and Danny got caught in the cross fire or something like that. Maybe the Barrows gang has kidnapped him. Or worse yet…”

Oscar he’s not dead. You’re letting your imagination run away with you. We are to Far East for Dillinger anyway. He stayed mostly in the Midwest I don’t think he ever came this direction.

“Well I don’t see him.” Oscar sounded dejected “Let’s go back to the boarding house, maybe we just missed him.”

They walked back to the house they had just come form. The woman observed them from the porch “Danny they are back.” She called through the screen door.

Oscar and Steve climbed the steps to the porch and walked toward the door.

Danny opened the door. “Hi dad, what are you doing here?”

“You’re smart you figure it out.” Oscar scolded. “You are grounded for the rest of your life.”

Danny pushed his glasses up on his nose and looked at his dad. “I was planning on being back before you knew I was gone.”

“Well we found out before. Your mistake came in giving Russ the abstract to the house and asking him to give it to me. It took Rudy only a minute to figure out what you were up to. Come on we are going back.”

“We need to go back to the house.” Danny informed them. Then he turned to the young woman who ran the boarding house. “Thank you anyway. I need to go with my dad.”

“I understand. Here is the money you gave me for you room.” She offered him his dollar bill he had given her.

“You keep it. I’m sorry if he caused any trouble.” Oscar said taking Danny’s hand. ”Come on Daniel. We need to get home.”

“You never call me Daniel.” Danny said as the walked down the front steps.

“I thought it appropriate since you are in the lion’s den.” Oscar said as they walked toward the house.

Danny looked up at him. “I don’t get it.”

“In other words buster, you are in big, big, big trouble.” Oscar explained.

“Oh now I get it.” They arrived at the house and went down the basement. “Now how do we get back?” Oscar wanted to know.

Danny pulled a small object that resembled a TV remote out of his pocket.

“What is that?” Steve asked.

“I call it a remote link, it’s linked with the computer in the basement. It’s already preprogrammed to get us back. I programmed it just in case I would get into trouble I could get right back home.”

“That sounds like a good idea. So how does it work?” Oscar said looking at the object in Danny’s hand.

They went into the storeroom “Here I’ll show you. Let’s stand over there.”

Just as they were about to get into position they heard footsteps descending the steps.

“I know I saw them go in here. More than likely vagrants.” They heard the voice say

“Quick Danny” Oscar said, he and Steve each held onto Danny, Danny pressed the button just in time Just as the police opened the door the three of them were back in 1975.

“That was quick.” Rudy observed. “You guys just left.”

“Really?” Oscar asked. Then he turned to Danny, “This whole thing is going to be transported to the OSI it is classified at a grade seven…”

“Hey!” Steve protested. “I’m only a grade six.”

‘I’ll bump you and Jaime up a notch.” Oscar told him.

“Well, that’s good.” Steve mumbled.

“Can I keep the computer?” Danny asked weakly.

“As soon as you demonstrate you can use it responsibly, “ Oscar told him.

“I can. Dad I just wanted to see if it would worked.” He turned to Rudy, “Help me out on this one. When you create something, don’t you want to test it? Nothing happened, I was coming right back.”

“He does have a point Oscar. I would like to test an experiment of mine to make sure it worked.” Rudy explained.

“Ok, ok. I’m out numbered, but I’m still moving it to OSI because it works. I’ll only classify it a grade six though.”

“Does this mean I stay a six?” Steve protested. “You promised.”

Oscar turned to him “Steve your as bad as the twins.” Oscar laughed. “Ok, ok you can still be a grade seven.”

“Jaime too?” Steve pushed.

“Jaime too” Oscar patted Steve on the head. They were still laughing as the walked upstairs.

“Yea!!” Steve said clapping his hands together.

Marc and Matt were sitting in the kitchen eating left over Christmas cookies for a snack. “Is Danny in trouble?” Marc asked.

“Yes he is.” Oscar said. He turned to Danny “ I want you to spend the rest of the day in your room.” Oscar scolded.

“What were you saying ‘yea’ about?” Jaime asked Steve as he sat down and started eating cookies with Marc and Matt.

“Oscar is raising us to a grade seven.” He told her.

“Well I must say it’s about time.” She agreed. “You obviously found Danny. Was he here when you got down there?”

“No, why?” Oscar asked.

“It seems like you just went down there. Maybe it just seems that way.” She finished.

“Rudy said the same thing. Must have something to do with the time we came back. Any way, the time machine is being moved to OSI for security reasons. Danny can work on it there with Rudy.” He turned to Rudy, “You don’t mind do you?”

“Not at all. But Oscar there is really nothing to move everything is on Dan’s computer. I think he started it on mine before I gave him his I’m sure it’s still there. Am I right Dan?

Danny nodded. “In fact it’s already to go on yours as well.”

“That’s what I thought.” Rudy turned to Marc. “Marc I’ve noticed something in the past few days. Do you do all the talking for you and Matt?”

“Yea, sometimes. I have to.” Marc pointed out.

“No, his speech is never going to get better. He has to speak for himself. I know you think you’re helping him, but you’re not.”

“Ok I’ll let him speak for himself.” Marc said.

“If that’s the case maybe we need to take Danny’s computer to the OSI? Oscar was still having a hard time understanding exactly what was going on.

“I can use the computer in the lab, that way Danny can keep this one here if you say it’s ok.” Rudy suggested. “All he has to do is get rid of the data and everything related to the time machine.”

‘Yea, I guess that would be all right.

“Danny will appreciate it.” Steve noted.

“Danny still has to work on his science project. He can work on it tomorrow. Christmas break is almost over. Is it ok if he comes in tomorrow?” Oscar asked.

“I have everything already for him to get started. In fact I had intended for him to do that until I ran across the IQ test in a drawer. And after what I found out today, He will more than likely finish it by the end of the day tomorrow.”

Jaime made coffer for everyone and they all sat at the table. Danny went downstairs to take everything having to do with the time machine off the computer.

“Rudy gave Dan an IQ test today.” Oscar began. “He’s smarter than any of us figured.”

Jaime turned to Rudy. “Really? What do you measure it at?”

“Somewhere in the neighborhood of 280.” Rudy told her

Jaime let out a small whistle “Your not serious?”

I’m very serious.” Rudy told her.

The next morning Danny again went with his dad. Rudy was waiting for him “I have everything you need already for you. You might as well get started.”

Danny started working Rudy acted like he was busy doing other things but his eyes never left Danny. Danny looked at the material laid out on the table and quickly got to work.

By lunchtime he had completed it.

Then he programmed Rudy’s old computer so it would become the time machine.

Oscar wanted to classify it higher than a six, but since it was Danny’s project he left it where it was.

“I can’t wait to get back to school and turn it in.” Danny said…
