2018 Warrior Grid Schedule Released By THS AD
BHS Drillers On Tehachapi Schedule

The 2018 Warrior football schedule was released by the Tehachapi High Athletic Director last week with plenty of interesting tidbits headlined by the scheduling of perennial San Joaquin Valley football powerhouse Bakersfield High School.

But first things first, the schedule features ten (10) regular season games with six home games and four away games. This is a positive for the Warriors as Tehachapi generally plays very well on the mountain. The other interesting aspect of the schedule is the early start date of August 17 (against Wasco at home) --- probably the earliest start date for a regular season game in school history dating back to 1930. Of course this means the regular season ends ealier than normal too --- before Halloween --- on October 26.

The five pre-league games feature quite a shake up from the past few seasons --- wiped off the schedule are Burroughs, Paraclete, and North Bakersfield. Tehachapi had played the high desert team from Ridgecrest for the past 15 seasons. North Bakersfield had been on the gridiron log for eight straight seasons.

The new schedule includes a number of current and former South Sequoia League (SSL) teams --- the Warriors former league for twenty seasons before moving up to Yosemite Division play in 2012. The season opener is against the Wasco Tigers who finished 4-2 in SSL play last season and were 5-6 overall falling in the first round of the playoffs. The schools last played each other in 2011 and the Warriors lead the overall series 25-11 in games that date back to the 1930's.

Week 2 finds the Warriors traveling to historic Griffith Field in Bakersfield for the game versus the Drillers. Not quite sure of the thinking in scheduling Bakersfield in this David vs Goliath matchup, but Tehachapi was very competitive in the only game the two schools have ever played at the varsity level, losing 14-6 in 2001.

Week 3 finds the Warriors back at home against Taft, another SSL foe, a school the Warriors last played in 2011. The Wildcats had a down year in 2017 finishing 2-4 in SSL play and 2-7 overall. The Warriors lead the overall series 18-12-1.

The Warriors will be back on the mountain again in Week 4 for a battle with Highland of Bakersfield. Highland had a very successful 2017 campaign winning a share of the Southeast Yosemite League crown and finishing 8-2 overall. The Warriors lead the overall series against the Scots, 6-2-1, a team they last played in 2013.

The final pre-league tune-up will be the annual Ogilvie Bowl Classic against rival Garces in Bakersfield. The Warriors defeated the Rams in 2017 by a narrow 28-27 margin, snapping a six game losing streak against Garces. Garces finished the 2017 season 4-1 in league play; and 5-7 overall. The Rams lead the overall series 24-20-2.

After a Bye Week on September 21, the Warriors will begin South Yosemite League (SYL) play on Friday night, September 28, against Independence-Bakersfield on the mountain. Tehachapi, Independence, and Ridgeview all shared the SYL championship each of the last two seasons.

The Warriors will play league newcomer Bakersfield Christian on October 5 in Tehachapi. The Eagles have moved up into the SYL replacing East Bakersfield on the schedule. Bakersfield Christian has won the SSL the past five straight seasons before making the move into the bigger, more competitive SYL.

The final three league games will be at Golden Valley on October 12; at Ridgeview on October 19; and home against West Bakersfield on October 26.

Second year coach Doug DeGeer and has staff are looking forward to the 2018 season after advancing to the semifinals of the CIF central section playoffs Division III last season before being eliminated by Tulare Western.

It should be another great season for mountain football. Please contact the Warrior Booster Club for ticket information.
