Denman Ever So Close To Lofty 300 Mark

To Steve Denman right now, the number 300 is just that — a number.

“I don't get caught up in numbers,” the Warriors head football coach said. “I've never been a stats guy. I never will be.”

A 28-14 upset victory over Ridgeview on Friday night, Oct. 28, gave Denman 299 career victories in his 35th season
as Tehachapi head coach — one away from the lofty 300 mark.

After an 0-4 start, it didn't look good for Denman this season, but in improving to 4-5, the Warriors have won three in a row and
four of their last five games.

Now, Denman's chances look good. He can reach the plateau in the Warriors' final game of the season at home against West on Friday, Nov. 4.
West is 1-8, winless in the South Yosemite League and has lost seven in a row, all by lopsided scores.

Still, Denman is blasé.

“Everybody else gets all tied up with the numbers,” he said, “but I'm not.”

Denman would become only the fifth coach in California scholastic history to win 300 games as a head coach, joining Bob Laduceur (399),
Marijon Ancich (360), Herb Meyer (338) and John Barnes (324), all of whom are now inactive.
