Warriors Dismantle Trojans in Opener
Team Dedicates Victory to Longtime Fan Terry Edwards

Posted on September 2, 2014 by Tom Shea, The Tehachapi News

The Warriors got their season off to a great start last Friday night at Coy Burnett Field, dedicating the 42-12 win over Foothill to their No. 1 fan, Terry Edwards.

Mountain Football put the game away early with a pair of clock eating drives on their first two possessions, both capped by Willy Urciel goal line scores. Urciel finished the night with four touchdowns and 52 yards rushing.

Keyron Scott was Tehachapi's leading rusher on the evening with 77 yards on eight carries, including a 28-yard second quarter touchdown. Jerry Castaneda helped ice the game in the third quarter with the Warriors longest play from scrimmage, a 47-yard touchdown run.

Connor O'Neal and Jacob Gonzales also caught passes from quarterback Chris Llamas, while Thomas Blewett, Angel Garcia and Colten Eaton had fumble recoveries.

On special teams, Abraham Katona went a perfect 6-for-6 on point after attempts and had four kickoff touchbacks.

Up next for the Warriors is a road trip this weekend against Burroughs-Ridgecrest. The Jayvee Braves will kick off this Thursday at 3:30 p.m., while the Freshmen Indians (3:30 p.m.) and Warriors (7 p.m.) will play this Friday.

While it was a great start to the season for the Warriors, the beginning of the contest had a somber mood in the stands when its greatest fan, a fixture of tradition, was not present to man his post in the concrete bleachers of Coy Burnett Field.

Terry Edwards, who attended 413 straight football games since the 1980 season, had his streak end this past Friday night. Edwards health prevented him from keeping his perfect attendance alive, having been recently diagnosed with cancer.

Edwards amazing run of consecutive football games span all the way back to Halloween night, 1980, when the Warriors defeated Bishop 28-8 at home.

While the Bishop contest was the start of the streak, Edwards attended games even further back when contests were played on Saturday afternoons, without lights, on the old Imhof Field. Edwards was present in the early 40s when he was just 10-11 years old and the players included Dick Johnson (for whom the press box at Coy Burnett Stadium is named), George Koutroulis, Fred Muro and Jessie Peters.

"I missed a few games in the early years working at my job at the cement plant, but I still came to games off and on before the streak started," said Edwards in 2004, when his perfect run reached the 300th game milestone.

After watching his son play against the Bishop junior varsity squad in '80, Edwards stuck around for the varsity contest and did not miss a game through 2013.

To commemorate the streak coming to an end, the Warriors will give Edwards the Foothill game ball, complete with all of the 2014 team member signatures, and an official game jersey.

TEHACHAPI -- Willy Urciel scored four touchdown runs on the ground, including the game’s first two scores, to help Tehachapi rumble to a 42-12 win on the mountain.

Keyron Scott was Tehachapi’s leading rusher with 77 yards on eight carries, including a 28-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Jerry Castaneda also had 73 yards on five carries and a 47 yard touchdown run in the second half.

Jaffee Ward scored on a 56 yard touchdown run in the third quarter for Foothill.

The fourth quarter was played with a running clock, with the game ending on a Randy Rodriguez 5-yard quarterback keeper in the endzone.

Longtime Warrior fan Terry Edwards, who had attended 413-straight varsity football games for Tehachapi from 1980-2013, had his streak come to an end against Foothill. Edwards was recently diagnosed with bone and liver cancer and could not attend the 2014 season opener due to health reasons. The Warrior football team will honor Edwards with an official jersey and the game ball, signed by the entire team. Both will be presented to him at a later date.
