Turnovers Key League Win
Tehachapi Pulls Away Early From East, 42-0

With an efficient offense and an opportunistic defensive secondary, Mountain Football made quick work of East in a lopsided 42-0 league win.

After an endzone interception by Steven Cross on the Blades’ first series, the Warriors needed only seven plays to go 80 yards to record the game’s first score, a Jorge Garcia 14 yard touchdown run.

On East’s ensuing possession, Cross struck again, recording another interception and taking the turnover 33 yards for another quick momentum building touchdown.

Cross’s second interception would pave the way for a total of four interceptions and two fumble recoveries on kickoffs by the Warriors. Tehachapi’s offense would take full advantage of the East miscues, scoring on their first four possessions with touchdown runs by Skylar Valencia, Barry Jones and Garcia to take a sizable 35-0 halftime lead.

Garcia would put the game away for good in the third quarter, scoring his third touchdown of the night on a two yard run, finishing with 165 yards on 19 carries.

With the game in hand, the referees initiated a running clock after the final Tehachapi score with about 15 minutes remaining in the contest.

In addition to Cross’s two interceptions, Ian Neufeld and Bobby Sharp also had interceptions and Jeremy Duff and Michael Contreras had fumble recoveries. Overall, the defense was stifling, giving up only 37 rushing yards and 114 passing yards to the Blades.

Other offensive highlights included Ty Curry with 51 yards rushing and a two point conversion run, while Caleab Hutto, Isaiah Hutto, Chris Rhodes, Jones and Valencia combined for 63 yards rushing. Ryan Flick and Duff also had receptions of 28 and 26 yards, respectively from Bobby Howell.

Mountain Football will take on Highland this Friday night in Bakersfield. The Scots played Garces last week, losing a 49-0 decision to the Rams in their league opener.

BAKERSFIELD - Plagued by first half miscues, the Warriors took advantage of six East turnovers to record a runaway 42-0 victory in the SEYL opener for both teams.

Tehachapi (5-1; 1-0 SEYL) opened up the scoring on their first drive, marching 80 yards on seven plays and capping it with a Jorge Garcia 14 yard touchdown run. The drive was set up off a Steven Cross interception in the endzone on East’s first series.

Cross would widen the Warrior lead on the Blades’ next possession, recording another interception off an overthrown pass and racing 33 yards to the endzone.

The momentum from the defensive touchdown fueled Tehachapi to more scoring runs by Skylar Valencia, Barry Jones and Garcia to close out the first half. The touchdowns were set up off an interception by Ian Neufeld and two fumble recoveries on kickoffs by Jeremy Duff and Michael Contreras.

Garcia scored the final touchdown of the evening midway through the third quarter on a two yard run, finishing the night with 165 yards on 17 carries. The referees initiated a running clock for the final 15 minutes of the game.

Tevin Beasley led East (0-6; 0-1 SEYL) with seven receptions for 46 yards. The Blades Marcus Rojas had a total of 96 yard rushing, receiving and passing.
