The Hornets eliminated last year's champ (Dana Gardens 8-5) and runner-up (Rutenschrorer 6-1) along the way to the final. In the Final game, Joy Driever's double plated 2 runs that gave Art's the 3-1 lead they would never relinquish. 1967 (at Sheboygan, WI)
Ridge Maintenance, Cleveland, OH ----------------------------   Dana Gardens, Cincinnati, OH
Dana Gardens defeated Publix, from Lakeland, FL to win their 6th game of the tournament. They needed to win the 7th and 8th to win it all. It wasn't meant to be. The Best Women's Slow Pitch team ever assembled that previously won National Championships in 1957 and finished 3rd in 1958. Then in 1962, started a string of excellence that would have them win National Titles in 1962, 1963 and 1964. Their record was 14-0. In 1965, they finished 5th, but came back in 1966 to go 7-1 and capture the title once again. This year, 2nd place is the best they could do (6-2 record). The teams national record in the 1960s was 30-5.  it took a good young team like Ridge Maintenance to defeat the Cincinnati squad. They did so by defeating the defending champs 4-3. In the final game, Ridge scored 3 runs in the 4th inning to take a 4-1 lead they would never relinquish. The Cincinnati club came back and scored 2 runs in the 7th inning, but fell just short in the 4-3 loss. Ida Jean Hopkins was named MVP for her exceptional play and leadership. This tournament was so balanced, that only one team placed more then one player on the all tournament team.  The championship team, Ridge Maintenance from Cleveland had one player on the team, MVP Ida Jean 'Hoppy' Hopkins.

Escue had to win 4 straight games on the final day to claim the crown, they eliminated defending champ, Ridge Maintenence 8-7, then had to play the tough Carolina Rockets, which they did (2-1) in 8 innings. Now they had the task of defeating a hot Carter's Rebels team from Florida. Then went out and defeated the Rebels 9-6 and then again 6-4 for the title as Gloria Hill came through with a clutch 2-run single to give Escue the lead in the top of the 7th inning and eventual winning margin, 6-4. York took an early 2-0 lead, but the Rubi-Otts moved back ahead with three runs in the second inning on back to back singles and a sac fly. It was a show down between the 2004 Women’s Open champion and the 2005 Women’s Open champion at the 2006 Hooters Championship Series. Enough Said swept the Armed Forces during the 2004 Women’s Open championship but it was the Armed Forces who swept the Yard Dawgs in 2005 to capture their first championship series. Solid defense held Long Haul scoreless during the next innings and the Armed Forces managed to score three in the second, two in the fourth and a run in the fifth to tie the game 6-6 in the top of the fifth. Long Haul responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead once again and added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Armed Forces managed to plate only one run in the top of the seventh inning and for the second time they were swept by Enough Said in the Hooters Championship Series. --------------------------------- Armed Forces, Washington, DC
Hawks/Miss Kitty’s, Coming from the loser’s bracket, Hawks/Miss Kitty’s captured the 2008 Women’s Open National Championship in a 6 -5 walk-off decision over the Armed Forces. It was a long day for the winning team as they  played five games tallying a 4-1 record. The Hawks forced the “if” game five when they skunked Armed Forces 10-0 in game four. In the final championship win, the Hawks were led by catcher and tournament MVP Sirene Johnson who led the way going 2-for-4 in the final game with three RBI. Armed Forces put up a great fight with four batters each contributing two hits. But they couldn’t hold the lead as Hawks/Miss Kitty’s scored two runs in the bottom  of the seventh for the eventual walk-off win. “This team has a great group of talent, but we just needed to pull  together our mental game today,” said tournament MVP Sirene Johnson. “And that we did. We lost to Armed Forces  twice and we really needed to combine our mental focus with our physical talent to win this. We changed our defense due to their base hits in the game before and we finally started hitting the ball. Our team never gave up! And we love Oklahoma City!” The home run champion went to Hawks/Miss Kitty’s Ruby Nugent while the batting champion went to extra hitter and head coach of the Hawks/Miss Kitty, Christan Dowling.

------------------------------------- Derby Girls, Seattle, WA
After Enough Said defeated the US Armed Forces  7-5, the Derby Girls eliminated the Armed Forces 18-15 in the Losers Bracket Final to get a shot at the Championship against Enough Said. But, it wasn't meant to be. Despite the power of Derby Girls' Christan Dowling who cracked 5 HRs and had 17 RBIs in the tournament, Enough Said put the Derby Girls away with a 12-4 Championship game win. Enough Said went undefeated with a 3-0 record to claim the ASA Women’s Open National Championship title defeating Derby Girls/Combat (3-2), 12-4, in the title game. Enough Said worked its way through the winner’s bracket with two wins against Derby Girls, the Championship victory and 18-7 victory, and a 7-5 win over Armed Forces. Enough Said earned its spot in the Championship Game after defeating Armed Forces 7-5. Armed Forces and Derby Girls/Combat then met up to avoid elimination and earn a spot in the title game. Derby Girls staved off elimination defeating the Armed Forces 18-15. The Derby Girls took an early 11-2 lead in the first and would hold the lead the entire game. The Armed Forces wouldn’t go down without a fight scoring four runs in the top of the seventh to threaten but the Derby Girls held their lead for the win. Misty Smith of the Derby Girls was 2-for-3 with four RBI to lead the team. With a victory, the Derby Girls moved on to face Enough Said for the Championship game. Enough Said and Derby Girls both put a run up in the first with Enough Said scoring three more in the third to take the lead of which they would never give up. It looked like the Derby Girls would cut the lead in the sixth when they loaded up the bases. However a fly out left runners stranded. Enough Said scored three unanswered runs in the top of the seventh to take away a 12-4 victory and National Championship performance for the second consecutive year. Nikki Hall, who was later named the Batting Champion, was ecstatic about the weekend and very thankful to her teammate, coach and the ASA.
