Johann Diedrich Conrad Backhaus, 4th child of the first marriage - that of

Marie Elisabeth Ahler Backhaus, was born October 13, 1770 and married Ilsa
Dorthea Elisabeth
Dohrmann, born January 22, 1778. Her father was the Master Blacksmith, Johann
Heinrich Dohrmann,
and her mother was Anna Schneider of the Hagemanns. Johann and Ilsa Backhaus
were the great-grandparents
of the Oldenburgs, Maylands, Dohrmanns, Bakehouses, Kleinschmidts, Strohmans,
and Wilkings.

The ancestral home of the "Bakehouse Family" (the Backhause Family) in
Landesbergen, Hanover, Germany.
Mrs. Louise Backhaus, daughter Anna and son Fred lived in the home place, but
in 1935 Fred was married.
He brought his wife to live in the home place with his mother and sister - as is
the custom in Europe.
The widow Louise Backhaus and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Fred Backhaus are shown in this picture, which is at the rear of the house.
The double doors open on a huge threshing floor on either side of which are the
stalls, there are rooms
overhead for the servants. This threshing floor is not only swept every day but
also scrubbed several times
a week. The horses and cows and hogs are not only brushed but really also
scrubbed every day, so that
a white animal is really white. At the end of the threshing floor are 7 or 8
steps leading up to a partition
of glass panels and a glass door. These steps lead into a large hall, where
there use to be a huge
fireplace where the meat for the family was cooked. The floor is tile.
>From this hall a side door leads out to the garden and the rear of the house.
>From this hall a few steps
lead up to the living quarters which consist of the living room, bed rooms and
a parlor. From the windows
of the living room one looks out into the beautiful garden and orchard at the
rear of the house; these are
enclosed by a beautiful green hedge.
Mr. Fred Bakehouse and bride taken right after the ceremony in June, 1935. They are the present owners of the "Old Backhaus" house in Landesbergen, Germany.
The mother and her daughter live with the oldest son, Fred. He takes care of
the mother for the rest or
her life. He cares for the sister until she marries, but, should the sister
not marry, her home is in the
old home with her brother and his family.
The original spelling of the family name is Backhaus but in America, U.S.A., it is Bakehouse.
This is the huge iron gate hung on great stone pillars with a stone seat on the
side under a big linden tree
which is over a hundred years old. Looking through the iron gate can be seen
the Oldenburg place - Old Guesthaus.
It is just across the main street of the village. This gate is at the entrance
to the Bakehouse place in
Landesbergen, Germany
