Egbert Otis Holenbeck 1830-1880

HOLLENBECK--Died at his residence in Minnesota Valley, on Friday, the 4th inst. of congestion of the stomach, Mr. Otis Holenbeck(sic), in the 49th year of his age. Just one week and one day from the death of his wife (whose obituary appeared last week), our beloved brother Hollenbeck quietly breathed his last and fell asleep in Jesus. The heavy stroke of the loss of his wife seemed more then he could bear. He seemed weary of life and expressed a desire to follow her who had been the partner of his joys and sorrows for thirty long years and very soon his desire was gratified. Brother Hollenbeck had been a member of the Christian Church for over thirty years, and during all those years he was ever true to the cause he loved so...(two words)...ever follow the divine commands of him who gave Him being. Calling his children to his bedside Friday morning realizing that death was near at hand, he bestowed upon them his last and dying request. Then losing his speech and very soon after becoming unconscious he lingered until 6 o'clock in the evening when death relieved him of all his sufferings. Farewell my be...(copy is cut)...were held in the Minnesota Valley School house by David Weizell on Lord's day the 6th, attended by a large circle of relatives and friends from whence his remains were taken to the New Liberty Cemetery where they were interned by the side of his faithful wife to await the "great day". May God help the mourning children to prepare to meet there dear parents in the ho...beyond the skies. W. = HIH

Parilla Holenbeck 1827-1880

Holenbeck(sic)--Died at her residence in Minnesota Valley on Thursday, February 26th, of general congestion. Mrs. Parilla Holleneck, wife of Otis Holenbeck, in the 53rd year of her age. Sister Holenbeck bore her sufferings with patience and Christian fortitude. Her last illness was of short duration, and upon her dying bed she said to her husband, "Yes, I'm ready to die. God's will be done." She was the mother of sixteen children ten of whom are left behind to mourn her departure. She had been a consistent member of the Christian Church for thirty years, having joined that church in Illinois when eighteen years of age. Thus we are called upon to mourn the loss of another of God's veterans. One by one they fall and as they thus fall they leave behind them the convincing testimony of the truth of Christianity. Her funeral was preached at the house, by her own request, by David Wetzel; which was attended by a large number of relations, friends and neighbors, which told of the high esteem in which she was held by all who knew her. Her remains were taken to the New Liberty Cemetery, followed by a large concourse of people, where they soon gently laid (her) away to await the resurrection of the just. God grant that husband and children may fulfill all righteousness that they may be permitted to meet her in the..(paper cut) = HIH

Benjamin Franklin Holenbeck 1865-1929

Benjamin Franklin Holenbeck was born April 8, 1865, in Jasper County, Iowa and passed away Jan. 27, 1929 at the hospital in Pawnee City, Neb. aged 63 years, 9 months and 19 days. When a small boy, his family moved from Iowa to Missouri and on Aug. 2, 1888, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Bell Rostock at Mound City Missouri. To this union were born 8 children, two passing away in infancy. In the fall of 1903 he and his wife with four children moved to Walters, Oklahoma, where they lived until 1913, when they came to Kansas, settling first near Centrailia, and then coming to the Axtell neighborhood where they have since resided, and where the wife died in December, 1925. Mr. Holenbeck suffered a severe attack of the flu on Jan. 12, 1928 which developed into pneumonia, and while he recovered to some extent, his health had been failing ever since. In Dec.24, he again entered the hospital and although it seemed at times as if medical skill would triumph, the end came quietly Jan. 17(sic), and he passed to eternal reward. For many years the deceased had been a member of the Methodist Church and about three years ago he united with the Axtell M.E Church and was a faithful member until the end, contributing of his time and substance in true christian spirit and manner. As a friend and neighbor Mr.Holenbeck knew no superior. He was ever kind and considerate, eager to help and lend a willing hand in every good cause. His jolly disposition, native wit, and .......with whom, he came in contact. His family life was most happy as the comfort and well-being of his loved ones came first in every instance. He was a splendid business man and discovered early that in order to succeed one must have a right start. Long ago he began to breed Durocs and became a power in that field of animal husbandry. The Holenbeck Durocs have been a by-word among breeders of that strain. Even when his health began to fail he kept on working and caring for his herd as only a master breeder will. Socially he will be missed among his circle of friends and those left to mourn his demise will ever remember his kindly spirit. Three stalwart sons and three beautiful daughters are left to cherish the memory of one who has ever been an affectionate father whose well spent life will be an inspiration. The children are Paul of Beattie, Daniel of Vermillion, Kenneth of Axtell, Ruth(Mrs.Chas. H. Moore, Marshaltown Iowa, Eliabeth......Butte, N.D. and Mrs. Viola Homer, Dickerson N.D. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 29 at the Axtell Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. E. Burdette and interment was made in Rose Hill Cemetery. The Standard joins the many friends of the bereaved children in extending consolation and sympathy in their great affliction. = HIH

Sunday, which drew an immense crowd, the procession to the graveyard some 3 1/2 miles away had twenty-six teams in line and a large number on horseback. He had insurance in the N.Y. Life and M.W.A. and his business affairs were in such good shape that it leaves his widow and three children fairly well provided for. He was about 46 years old.
