Graphics(9)-The game uses the new Expansion pack which enables it to increase the resolution and produce smoother frame rates. As soon as you play with the Expansion pack in, the game looks utterly beautiful. The ships are so round and there's just an incredible amount of detail to them. For instance, you can actually see the Artoo unit on top of the ship. However, as with the up’s their are downs. The storm Troopers from a distant don't look that bad, but when you get close up you can tell that their 2-dimensional sprites. The water, also, isn't up to par with the likes of Wave Race. It's quite choppy and has no reflective surface either, making it look like a floating blob.
Sound(10)-This is easily one of the most impressive aspects of this game. The sound track is actually composed by John Williams himself. Rogue Squadron shows that with a little extra work, that excellent sound is capable on the N64, in fact, it sounds as if you're listening to the sound track itself of the actual Star Wars movies. Then there's the tremendous amount of speech in this game, including a lengthy biography of many of the members in Rogue Squadron and a description of each vehicle. Thanks to very nice compression methods, Factor 5 managed to fit more then 40 minutes of speech in this game! Then, of course, there’s the actual sound effects, and which, let me tell you are amazing, you would swear you were listening to the actual movie.
Play Control(8)-While, there is a bit of a learning curve figuring out the controls to this game, it soon becomes second nature. You are given the option of choosing from one of four control settings each named after one of the pilots in Rogue Squadron. My personal favorite controls are Luke's which also is the default option. Another nice thing is that all the vehicles have similar controls, but with different handling and weapons, thus makes the game extremely easy to pick up and play after you've gotten the hang of flying one of the crafts.
Fun Factor(9)-This is fun all the way from the start. I just can't think of anything cooler then flying through Beggar's Canyon chasing down a Tie Fighter. It's just so much fun. Then later in the game you get involved in some really wicked dog fights with some really immpresive imperial forces. Then, when you've completed the game, you can go back into any level and fly around as numerous new vehicles available to that level now.
Replay Value(7)-The game, while quite fun, does tend to get old after a while. Now don't get me wrong, there are several things that you can earn after you beat the game, like medals, and if you earn enough you'll gain access to one of three secret levels. The game also lacks a multiplayer mode which would have no doubt extended the life of this game. It is, however, real fun just to fly around the levels with no point looking at the great scenery.
Overall-9.0/10
