Kes

LIFE ON OCAMPA
Kes is an Ocampan that began her short life span in a subterranean city on Ocampa. Her mother, Martis, and father, Benaren, raised her during her first year. Ocampans typically live only nine years and become adults around age one. Her father was the greatest inspiration for her life even though he died right after her first birthday. Kes also had an uncle named Elrem. The Caretaker, a powerful entity, provided all the food and energy for the Ocampan people and he was the force that drove them underground. Kes didn't enjoy the sheltered life, so she gave in to her curiosity and made the journey to the surface, leaving her culture behind.
The surface of Ocampa was a desert, without water, and incapable of growing any grain after an accident caused by the Caretaker. The Kazon-Ogla set up an encampment on the surface to mine the one resource available, cormaline deposits. The Kazon-Ogla captured Kes when she got to the surface and forced her to be a slave, helping to mine the cormaline. She was treated horribly, even being denied precious drinking water. Neelix met her there and felt horrible for her. He fell in love with her and even endured the wrath of the Kazon when he stole water to give to Kes.

KES, THE CAREGIVER
Voyager's crew rescued Kes from the Kazon, after Neelix tricked them into it. Both she and Neelix were allowed to remain on Voyager as civilian crewmembers. Kes found exploring the universe to be a wondrous experience, and every adventure was a joy to her. Her innate curiosity and love of helping others led her to be a medical assistant in sickbay. The Holodoc quickly became one of her closest friends, and she was the first to stand up for his rights and accept him as a person rather than as a mere hologram. Her incredible memory and compassion for patients made her a quick learner and a valued assistant to the often brusque Doctor. Kes also managed the hydroponics/airponics bay in cargo bay two to aid Voyager's food resources. Some of her most content moments were watching the seedlings grow.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Once Kes joined Voyager's crew she began exploring some of the latent abilities from her heritage. She was already able to speak telepathically, but her first experience beyond that was when she had sudden knowledge of the destruction of a civilization. Kes was often able to sense when a crewmember had been in a room, and in an alternate timeline she was even able to tell exactly where Kathryn had died. Tuvok assisted Kes in learning how to discipline her mind, furthering her mental control. With Tuvok's help she learned to look into people's minds and was once able to hear Neelix's thoughts. They used many Vulcan techniques, including mind melding with each other. She could sense the presence of aliens on Voyager and was able to incapacitate a Bothan alien by using her telepathy.

ROMANCE
Kes and Neelix were in love and had a relationship for several years. They always kept separate quarters, hers were on deck eight. During their relationship she once asked Neelix to father a child for her when she thought she was going through the elogium. Neelix was a very protective and jealous boyfriend. He was aware of Toms' crush on Kes and became hostile, resulting in the two having a food fight in the mess hall. Kes only had eyes for Neelix though, considering Tom a friend. Tom did not pursue any romance with Kes despite his feelings. On Wednesdays Neelix always made Kes' favorite food, Trellian crepes.
When Neelix and Tuvok were combined into a single person due to a transporter accident, it was a horrible experience for Kes. She desperately missed Neelix and wanted him back. Kes was quite thrilled when Neelix was finally separated from Tuvok. She once noted that Ocampans choose a mate for life, but even still Kes decided to stop dating Neelix. Kes broke up with Neelix while she was possessed by Tieran, but after she was returned to normal she admitted the experience had changed her and she didn't want to resume the relationship anyway. The two remained friends, although Neelix did seem a little broken hearted. Kes had a brief romance with Zahir, a Mikhal Traveler. She considered leaving Voyager to spend some more time with him, but later decided to remain onboard.

ULTIMATE ADVENTURE: LEAVING VOYAGER
She began experiencing extremely heightened psychokinetic abilities after her telepathic contact with Species 8472. She discovered these abilities when a hypospray flew to her, across the sickbay, simply because she wanted it. The next few days her skills progressed rapidly to her immediately knowing Seven of Nine was attempting to contact the Borg and being able to mentally cause an energy discharge to stop Seven. When Seven needed surgery to correct a Borg incompatibility, Kes performed the operation by merely visualizing it. Tuvok and Kes experimented to see how advanced her abilities had become and found Kes could manipulate a flame by thinking about it and was even able to see beyond the subatomic range. She was very excited about her new abilities, but was unable to totally control them and accidentally distorted a mess hall table for a short time. Her body was going into cellular flux, which was destabilizing Voyager's bulkheads with the forces she was emanating. Kes knew she couldn't stay on Voyager because transformation of her body would destroy the ship. She got on a shuttlecraft and then, in a brilliant flash of light, she evolved into a non-corporeal being. Her new life away from Voyager had begun and the energy she expelled catapulted Voyager 9500 light years closer to the Alpha Quadrant, taking 9.5 years off their journey.
Even though she is no longer on Voyager, Kes made an incredible impact on the crew by delighting all with her joy and wonder. Her final gift of transporting Voyager 9.5 years closer was impressive, but the best gift was simply knowing her.
