In the Fall of 1997, fourteen women: Nhung Truong, Susan Varee, Cynthia Chang, Lori Hiura, April Mallari, Clarice Bandoy, Marissa Elson, Gabriela Ibanez, Sophani Khvann, Sophanna Khvann, Amy Nguyen, Tonia Tran, Evelyn Ng, and Katherine Tran realized that there was a need for an Asian-American voice among women at San Diego State University. Although there was a growing Asian-American population at SDSU, the existing greek system did not reflect the changing student body. That winter, Susan made the inital contact with the Expansion Chair from Alpha Phi Gamma to set up a meeting.
After the historic initial meeting with a few representatives of Alpha Phi Gamma, the fourteen ladies were pleased to discover that the sorority held the ideals that they were looking for. On February 7, 1998, the fourteen charter members began their challenge of establishing a chapter of Alpha Phi Gamma at SDSU. Under the supervision of the Alpha Chapter, these ladies were able to learn and understand the meaning behind the sorority. Soon after they had began, these ladies realized that they had been able to strengthen their friendship while establishing the everlasting bond of sisterhood. On April 25, 1998, the fourteen ladies were formally inducted as the charter class of Alpha Phi Gamma, Beta Colony. To this day, with each member who turns active, Alpha Phi Gamma has been able to make its traditions nad history last forever by placing it in their hearts. Each sisters' unique personality and interest have contributed to the ongoing success of the sorority.
Alpha Phi Gamma also focused on philanthropy activities to help better the ladies who joined, and to create a bond with the community. Some philanthropy activities that the ladies of Alpha Phi Gamma associate with are AIDS Walk, Race for the Cure, MS Walk, March of Dimes, the Race for Literacy, and many more.
Alpha Phi Gamma is composed of a diverse group of young ladies with varying majors, interest, and backgrounds. With their desire and determination the sorority was able to grow and foster into a strong sisterhood.
