Recorded, Mixed & Mastered at Lion Studios

".....Everybody’s Got a Name was wonderfully recorded by John Herbert at Lion Studios, in Singapore. This is the second recording I’ve heard by Herbert -- the first was Chako’s Paint a Picture, Tell a Story. I’m beginning to think every jazz musician should make the trek to Singapore to work with him....."

MUSIC TECHNOLOGY & AUDIO RECORDING COURSES

Many people feel that, despite technological advances, the actual standard of recorded music has been steadily declining over the past decade or so. Mostly this seems to be attributed to the availability of cheap home PC recording systems allowing pretty well anybody with a computer to make "music" at home, and a swing away from the traditional ways in which studio engineers were trained - with the result that many of the tried & tested studio techniques, as well as the creative & technical expertise of studios & engineers, has been (or is fast being) lost to the younger generation. We aim to help correct this.

In response to inquiry's and suggestions, we have started to run periodic short three or four day courses on studio recording techniques & music technology. Although the courses are biased towards "real" instruments and groups recording we do touch briefly on Sampled Sounds, MIDI, sequencing and programming.

These courses are aimed at people who already have a little knowledge of recording but who want some insights into professional studio techniques & practices; home studio owners who need to know a little more about how they can improve their techniques; or musicians who simply want to know more about the whole recording process . The schedule is:

  MORNING SESSION AFTERNOON SESSION
Day 1 Microphone techniques with drums, guitars, vocals, and acoustic instruments.  Recording techniques, track planning, tracking, overdubbing, the use of effects.
Day 2 Sequencers, Timecode and synchronization.  MIDI sequencing on PC based sequencer packages (Vision).
Day 3 Mixing, sub-mix, grouping, effects, the use of compressors limiters & noise gates on a mix.  Hard Disk Recording, Digital Editing, and Mastering.  ProTools

The above schedule may be changed to accomodate participants requirements and interests.

We intend to keeping the courses down to 5 or 6 participants at a cost of $400. per person. Hopefully there will be a 'guinea pig' band in the studio for some of the sessions to help demonstrate various techniques so all the points covered can be seen in action.

The sessions will be conducted by Lion Studios' chief engineer John Herbert who has over 30 years experience working in professional studios in various parts of the world, both as Engineer and Producer, and has worked with many of the world's top artists. John is also a member of the Composers & Authors Society of Hong Kong, and served for 3 years as a member of the Advisory Committee to Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Film Sound & Video department. In 2007 John recieved the "Artistic Excellence" award from the Composers & Authors Society of Singapore (COMPASS).

If you are interested in joining our next course please e-mail us now with your details, including contact telephone number, and a brief statement as to why you wish to do a course like this, your field of interest, and which days would be most convenient. When we've fixed the dates we'll then get in touch with you and let you to let you know the details.

At the end of the course there will be no certificates handed out, but what there will be is, hopefully, a better understanding of how a typical recording studio session works.
