This page came about because I started a new job as a job coach at Sioux Vacational Services, a non-profit organization designed to assit people with with developmental disabilities in achieving their life goals.
This is perhaps one of the greatest jobs I have ever had. I believe that there is something to be said about the idea that those that help and teach, are often doing this more for themselves. I know that I get best high a person could get when I see someone achieve a goal they have had thir entire life. There is nothing in the world better then the feeling you get when you see this happen and know that you had a little part in see this happen. Payment is seeing their dreams become reality; even if it takes a life time. I would work for free.
On of the first things I was reminded about is that for so many Americans, the idea of seeing a person with a developmental disability in the public workforce as strange or at best a novel idea. That distrubs me. I have also been told what a kind person I must be OR how patent I must be to work with "those kinds of people". How rude. How insulting. I am not the most kind, nor am I the most patent person in this world. What I am is a person who has seen a need that is has need to be filled.
I resently left Sioux Vocational Services due to lack of hours. there just wasn't enough for me to do there. I have this need to help people and to feel that I have given something back to society, and sadly I did not recieve the measurement of fulliment that I needed from Sioux Vocational. I still believe in their actions and support their goals. It is a great place, I left because if was not enough for me.
