Who Are We?
The churches of Christ are a nondenominational body
of believers bound together
by a common faith in Jesus Christ and hope of eternal life.
We believe in the verbal (plenary) inspiration
of the Scriptures. We hold that the Scriptures are an all-sufficient rule of
faith and practice arid that Christians are to adhere to the pattern of faith
arid practice recorded in the New Testament. The pattern of faith and practice
recorded in the New Testament is
founded upon the commandments of God, establishing, once for all, the
doctrine arid traditions of Christ's church. The pattern of faith arid practice
is recorded in direct statements
(commands) approved apostolic precedent
(example), and necessary inference. Example, command and necessary
inference guide us in determining what the church must do, not that which alone
may be done.
We believe Christianity is nonsectarian:
Because we are Disciples of Christ only, we are Christians only, we
believe Christianity is nondenominational: Jesus Christ is the head of the
church: no council of men has
authority to bind others
To its opinion or
proclamations. We have no creed but Christ. Nothing is made conditions of
communion that Christ has not
Made necessary to salvation.
We wear no denominational names. We practice baptism (immersion)
but are not “Baptists.” We hold that there is one
Universal (i.e. catholic)
church, but we are not “Catholics.” We
have bishops (Greek: episkopio) but we are not “Episcopalians.” We have elders
(Greek: presuterio) but are not Presbyterians. We make no boast of begin the
“one true
Church.” We hold that all who obey the gospel have an
equal claim on Christ. We seek only to be faithful. Endeavoring to
Serve the one true and d
living God in spirit and it truth.
Christ our only creed: the Gospel our only plea: the Bible
our only basis of unity.
