I am, Praise be to God, "un-married" to a wonderful, supportive man! His name is Eric Wenger. He is, like myself, a Muslim American. He is originally from Minnesota, but moved to South Dakota in spring of 1996.  [we have been told that since we are heterosexuals, we can not state we are religious identified as married, nor can we be civilly married, if I want to maintain my medical benefits provided to me through disability services of the federal government. We were told that if we had been a homosexual couple, rather than heterosexual, a religious marriage would not be an issue -- however since we are heterosexual the federal government discriminates against us if we identify ourselves as "married" or "husband & wife". So, we are "un-married" by federal regulation]

It was only by the Grace of God, that I met him. It was due in part to the severe winter of 1996, and a huge snow drift that made his small trailer in the back corner of town a sledding hill!

Yes, a Sledding hill. The kids in town discovered the snow drift that had all but completely engulfed Eric's trailer. Praise be to God, my son was one of those kids.

When Eric woke (he worked night shift)  that day to the sounds of giggling & stomping feet above his head… it was destiny in a way.

As he trudged outside into the winter snow to go to work, he looked up at the kids with their sleds (who were looking back at him is terror that they were going to get in trouble). He just

Eric outside his trailer's porch, which he had to dig out, due to the drift. The "floor level" is four feet BELOW where he is standing!     Normally he was able to walk under the porch roof.

him is terror that they were going to get in trouble). He just smiled . To my son, a light bulb came on! He figured this guy had to be cool & so he began visiting him. My son was only about 13 at the time.

Daily he kept disappearing & when he would return home & I'd ask where he'd been for hours… he would reply "at Eric's".    After a while I decided I'd better learn more about this man who was "hanging around my son".

As it turned out, Eric describes the encounters as being that of two teenage boys (Pat often had his friend in tow) who            discovered Eric had great junk food in his house & he shared!

Whatever the draw, Patrick would daily go to Eric's. Finally he asked me to meet him &  I did (19997). A year later, we married.

Eric & I with my step-father,          Clarence McCauley & my mother,      Juanita. May 1998 at our wedding
