Firefly DVDs
I bought the set the day it hit the stores and have been kind of picking my way through them at my leisure. I watched all the episodes as shown on TV first, in the order they are presented and, man, I miss this show!
The added commentary by cast and crew is terrific. I liked the way they pointed out things obvious to themselves about their performances, etc., that I never would have picked up on any other way. Morena Baccarin talking about how difficult it was to dance and speak her lines at the same time sounds like a joke until you take into consideration the camera angles. She was dancing with the cameras as much as with her human partners while trying to speak her lines when the camera could see her face. Alan Tudyk's commentaries were hilarious. Loved the "Headless Wash" scene, and the magical three switches.
I ended up re-watching the entire 4 disks again after the revelation by Joss in "Serenity" that Jayne was intended to have a little crush on Kaylee from the beginning. I remember that scene where he is crouched carefully out of sight just outside the infirmary as Simon operates on her. I used to think "What's he doing there?" That one whizzed right past me! There was more to his dislike of Simon than I originally thought.
My only complaint is the gag reel was missing a lot of the scenes that were included in the version that was available for download on the internet last spring. The very funny 360 spin of the camera in the cargo bay, for instance. We hear it mentioned in commentary made by Alan Tudyk and Jewel Stait, but it's missing from the gag reel! Also the scenes of Sean Mahar calling the character of his sister by the name of the actress who played her. I think Joss mentions that in a comment and so it's deleted from the gag reel. Too bad. They also took out Nathan Fillion's muttering of "f**kety f**k f**k!" in scenes whenever he blew a line.
I'm also very intrigued by the order of the episodes as determined by Joss and not the network. The unaired episodes were, apparently, not intended to be the last episodes in the series. "Objects in Space" was supposed to be aired last - in continuity to the others. Very interesting.......
It just makes me wish all the more for a set of DVDs, with at least a partial cast participation, to be made available of "Earth 2." The more time passes, though, the less likely that might be. I hope the petition for a DVD set lights a bulb over somebody's head soon.

I got it for Christmas! I got it for Christmas!
(Well, I hinted long and hard enough, LOL!)
So far I have watched "Serenity" straight on and then with the commentary. I have to say the network made such a huge mistake writing off the pilot episode in favor of a shorter more action filled story to show first. It was a downright stupid idea to never show the pilot until after the series was canceled. If I had seen the 2 hour pilot first I would have watched the show every week. As it was I never got a real handle on the show because I had no idea who the people were or why they were doing what they were doing. Knowing how Simon and River and the shepherd got aboard and why they stayed helps me to understand the series better.
For all his bluff and bluster, Mal lets out the side of him that still wants reassurance from God by letting the shepherd stay aboard as part of his crew. Even though he states very clearly that God isn't welcome aboard his ship, just by letting Book stay blows a hole in that statement! He's very angry at God, but something deep inside is giving Him a chance to change his, Mal's, mind. I always suspected that, but not until seeing the reason why he stopped believing do I understand it all.
I saw only a handful of episodes when it was on TV so most of this DVD will be new to me and I can't wait to see more! Every chance I get I'm going to watch another episode. I've got all of midterm break to do it. Tonight or tomorrow morning I'm going to watch "Train Job" and listen to the commentary. I didn't know what was going on the first time I saw it-- more than a year or so ago-- so I want to hear what they say about it.

I wish Adam Baldwin and Gina Torres had been able to participate. I' d liketo hear more about what theysaw in their charactersand why they plyed them the way they did. Can't wait for the movie. Please, Joss turn in a good script!

Hi Rob!
We finally got through the whole set and just absolutely love the whole series. All the episodes I missed were great to see at last, and I wish I had taken the time to record them and watch them at the time. I remember when the pilot was going to be shown- I saw references all over the internet, but I never thought to watch it or record it because by then I was getting into the reruns of Farscape and it's final season. I missed a good opportunity to finally understand Firefly. I'm kind of ticked off by that, but also kind of glad because it made most of the DVD a brand new experience for me and I just love it.
My b/f and I are spending the holidays with my parents this year- we're going home tomorrow for the rest of mid term break- and we were waiting for everyone to go to bed each night so we could sit up and watch Firefly. Well, my folks eventually got curious to see what we were watching and laughing about so late at night and they started watching it with us earlier in the evening. My mom was happy to see Ron Glass acting in something again because she remembers him from Barney Miller, and my dad is discovering the show for the first time. He can't believe the show was cancelled and never given a chance to succeed! After watching the commentaries we are all big fans of Alan Tudyk. Especially my mom! She said he's in the movie Hearts in Atlantis for about five minutes as a carnival barker. And she remembers Nathan Fillion from the movie Blast from the Past.
I think I've made 2 converts here! Anyway my brother bought the DVDs as soon as they came out and he said Mom and Dad can borrow them to watch after Brad and I leave.
So we're going to try to download the internet gag reel as soon as we get home. We want to see the whole thing. Especially the scenes you mentioned.

I bought the DVD set last weekend. After hearing so much talk about Firefly here and at other places on the internet, I thought I would find out once and for all what everyone is talking about.
You know what would have been great? If FOX had shown the pilot first. Like everyone else I saw the first two episodes on TV but I had no clue what was going on, who the characters were, what the hell a box girl was, so I just wrote the series off. It was too hard to follow. That second episode about the guy who killed everyone on his ship and then the military came and I was so lost, I don't remember watching it all the way through. I think I probably turned to Farscape and watched that! Like too many people I stopped watching and never gave it a chance like you did.
If the pilot had been shown first, it would have made a big difference to me! Like all Joss shows it had great dialogue, some of the funniest moments I've ever seen even though they'd been done before. Like the big guy, Jane?, testing his reciever/transmitter while standing right next to the captain. Funny stuff.
The captain shooting the horse, the preacher always saying, "I never married. I'm not a grandpa."
I'm on the third disk now and sorry to see I have only one more after this one.
It's not to say the show is without flaws, it has a few, but the characters are so well drawn and the acting so good, I can see how so many have fallen in love with the characters and this whole show.
It is very much like Earth 2 in that respect, isn't it? Like E2 there will be a fandom going strong for it ten years down the line, too.

Hi Kenneth. How've you been?
Yes!!! I agree. If you stretch the imagination a bit, Firefly is very much like Earth2 in some ways. I was thinking about it and I think maybe that was why I never really gave it a change when I first started to watch it. Maybe, at the time I wasn't ready to fall for a show the same way I fell for E2.
We have the in-denial by both sides romance between the strong leader and an equally strong crewmember, a married couple devoted to one another, a doctor reluctantly coming to realize he has feeling for another crewmember, who is very attracted to him, but can't quite express those feelings, an older person who seems to know everything there is to know when he's needed to know it, and one crew member who never does the right thing unless pushed. There are even two child-like young women whom everyone looks after like baby sisters.
Don't you just love the commentaries?
Also I'm wondering if Inara ever leaves the ship. I'm sure something trivial would have come up and both she and Mal would have leaped on it as a reason for her to stay.

Do you think Inara mighthave been a one season character? do you think she might have left and someone else come aboardto rent the shuttle?

What about the girl, River? In Joss's commentary he said she was a whole person now. Does that mean she's not crazy anymore? Does it mean she knows what she is now? Can she help Simon now in making her better if she is still crazy?
