GREATEST SUMMER EVER

Looking back at the summer of 2002 It ocurred to me that this was possibly the greates summer for science fiction movies ever. Not only were the films highly succesful but they were also very good.

Entertainment Dollar Lets consider if you could watch a movie and then pay for the entertainment value of the picture.

Signs---$15
Minority Report---$12
Spiderman---$8
Attack of the Cloners---$7
Men in Black II---$2

First off we had the much anticipated Spiderman movie. The movie had a descent story, great effects and likable characters. It is one of the most sucessful comicd to film. Shortly after Spiderman came the latest Star Wars movie Attack of the Clones. One of the most visually stunning movies ever the pace was a little slow and the characters a little thin. Never the less the action was nonstop and the fantasy worlds created unforgetable. Next came the latest Steven Spielberg movie Minority Report. A unique movie for Spielberg the story is incredibly cerebral and the look very grainy like an old time crime thriller. There is plenty of action and effects don't get me wrong but the attention here is on the incredible ideas. Shortly after Minority came the one flop of the summer though not at the Box Office. Men in Black II is nothing more than a second rate remake of the original. The fist movie was nothing more than a pilot episode type of story and needed to be expanded upon to ever create a passable entertainment. The effects were awsome ofcourse but the story and characters were not even passable even for kids. The best was yet to come though with the masterwork Signs. Filled with great characters and writing Signs is a classic destined for top 10's if only people would give it a chance. Not only one of the scariest films ever but suprisingly one of the funniest.

Box Office

Spiderman--$403,706,375
Attack of the Cloners--$299,064,373
Men in Black II--$188,604,665
Signs--$150,513,131
Minority Report--$129,115,416

All five films made over 100 million dollars with Star Wars closing in on 300 and Spiderman making 400. Looking to this fall comes an animated version of treasure island and the latest Star Trek movie. Nothing though can top this summer.
