Chapter One: Turncoats
In the jungle, deep in the shades of the trees, Shadow is now
facing the tragic situation that is at that moment sitting in a
pool of it's own blood.
-This can't be happening! [The horror that is displayed before her is the miserable Slugger] How in the world did you manage to escape the fight?
-That's not to be of your concern. The matter at stake is your city! If you don't help me send a message to, to... ANYONE, then, everything will be at lost!
-What is it?! Why won't you tell me?! AND WHY SHOULD I HELP YOU?! You have done nothing but play the role of a turncoat. You are a liar, a betrayer, a feind in the mist of conspiracies. What kind of honor and reputation do you think that would give you, HUH? WHY SHOULD I LISTEN TO YOU?!!!
-Because I am the only one who can give you the truth. I am the only link your city has to knowing how deep you are in danger.
-What makes you say that you are not putting on a mask in my presence? Why should I not believe that you won't become a turncoat once more?
-LOOK AT ME, MISS LYON! I am on the brink of dying here. [He shows his open wounds.] I have seen the light of the afterlife that is waiting for me, and I understand the passage to true inner peace. You must forgive my sins, so does your city.. so does my brother. I understand the meaning of life, of love. I don't want this war to destroy your beautiful city, your civilization that holds true serenity. Only once I am forgiven that... I will be able to exist in the serenity. This is why I am still here in the real world, I have been given the chance to continue, only for a short while, so that I will be cleansed from the evil that had poisoned me for so many years.
All during this, Shadow had sat still, listening to his words of despair, while he struggled to keep his breath, panting and scratching in his voice, swallowing his saliva to keep his vocal cords working. They had remained in silence for several moments more.
-Alright then, I'll help you, but I'm keeping an eye on you.
She helped him to stand up and they started their little journey back to the cave to retrieve her pack with the suplies.
Many of them were running out of the buildings. Cougar had a
hard time getting trought the tough croud. Finaly reaching the
sub level entrence, he tugged at the door over and over again.
Seeing the padlock on the knob, he grabbed the closest barrier
pole and began wacking the knob. The door swung open and he
rushed inside and down the stairs. The light from the surface
couldn't reach all the way down the stairs. In the faint light,
he noticed several swithces on the wall; flicking one of them, a
source of light appeared from the darkness. The light filled the
room partialy, realizing he had reached the sub leves, he turned
on the reamaining light switches. The entire room lit up by
hallogen tubes and popping bulbs. Large machines and transformers
filled the room. A long walk led him to the center of the room,
the clang of the metal walk echoed on the concreat walls.
A huge genorator was occupying the center of the underground cavity. He stared at it in amazement at it's immense size. He heard someone waling on the metal grid walk on the other side of the generator.
-So the Dragon Rebbelion has started. the person said. I knew this day would come.
-Of course it's me. Now do you see why I asked for you to evacuate the buildings?
Cougar noticed that there was more than one access to the generator, each building that composed SkyTowers had access to the same sublevels. He walked up to the railing that prevented him from falling over the steep creves between the walk and the machine.
-I can see why. But how did you run this thing? What kind of power source did you use to generate the electricity in this machine.
Keith moved towards one of the covered transformers, pulling the protective sheets over to reveal the immense cylinders of particle stabalizers and electrodes.
-We went directly to the source, one third of the city's power reactor had been constructed specificly for this machine. The CityField was a big project, we got fundings from many companies and the government, that was until the elections. The new goverment shut the system down.
Cougar placed his hands on the sheet metal that made the body of the edmiter and gazed his father from afar.
-Can it still generate a force field?
Keith hesitaded, wrapping the sheets into a bundle, he walked pass Cougar to pull away another sheet.
-We need to reconnect all the transformers and make a couple of calls, warn the city in case of fluctuating power.
-What are the concequences to a power flux?
-A high risk that is not of concern now.
Claw had arrived at head quarters to find several of the high
officers working on their bandages, they had been talking with
eachother before he came in. The Commander looked at him sternly.
-What is the matter with you! Lieutenant Kentrose! All of unit 07 and most of the other units are balming all of the injuries and casualties on you.
-Sorry, sir, I asure you that I had no involvement in this Dragon Rebellion.
-You're lucky that I'm not taking your duties, a lot still blame the hurt on you, Lieutenant Kentrose... Or should I say, Lieutenant GAMMA! Kowing that's your father's name, like that of your brother. Surely you don't take your mother's name cause you take after her.
-SHUT UP! I HAVE NO FATHER! I never had a father my entire life. And Slugger is... was only my half brother, not like I had a chance to know him. AND DON'T YOU TALK ABOUT MY MOTHER. Her blood runs in my vains, she gave me LIFE! That is why I take her name. I may be a hybrid, but I am not cold blooded.
Just then, one of the cadets came to him with a message in his hand and handed it over to Claw.
-Officer Timber has just sent this memo.
He read it over and replied to the cadet.
-Forward to this to the survailance technitions. The equipments needs to be there pronto.
Shadow had helped Slugger move from the ditch and back toward
the cave, draging him on his side with his arm swung around her
shoulders. The dirt clung to them as they moved slowly across the
floor fot he fisure. The hard part would be to climb the muddy
walls. Slugger's weight began to streing her back, both fell on
their sides. She let go of hs arm and rolled over out of the way.
-I'm sorry, miss Lyon.
She got on her knees and turned her face towards him.
-I said I'm sorry, that I weigh so much. I've been training for about thirty years, never stopped a day in my life. I was going to be a General.
Shadow watched him with interest.
-It may not be too late.
-No, I don't deserve such a rank now. I must help this world. How much distance left?
-hmm, I'd have to say four hundred yards away.
-then leave me here, get the communicator. It's too dangerous on the surface, especialy if I'm to slow you down.
She hesitated and pondered.
-Alright. You just keep out of sight.
She started to climb the dirt wall, falling not long after reaching three feet. She was covered once more in the mud. She searched the wall therally for something solid to grip on. Finaly, she found a tree root. She smiled triumfantly as she pulled it and pulled herself upwards.
Staying low to the ground, hugging the grass, she moved from tree to tree, remaining in the shade. She shifted slowly, not to attract any more attention. She moved swiftly across the field. She heard the reptilian guards talking to each other near the cave. It were the same two that found her earlier, but this time was different, they were armed, and they were standing next to her bag.
She dred to see that those dragons notice the bag, they immidiatly confiscated it.
dumping the contence onto the ground, they samshed all the equipment.
Her head droped as they flew away. She looked around to see if there were anymore of those guards, not a single soul in sight. She hurried over to the scrap pile to find that her two way radio was demolished. She turned her head, expecting to find the transmiter dug up, but it wasn't, it was still hidden away from view next to the entrance of the cave. She quickly dug it out of the ground and carried along with her what she had been able to salvage.
Coming down the stairs, some of the technical research &
development staff were on their way to join Cougar who was
removing some covers with his father. Keith greeted them as they
arrived at the bottom of the stairs
-Gentlemen, welcome to the CityField.
One of the elder scientists come forward to speak with Keith.
-I remember this constuction from when I first came here, this is the energy eater that the govener Kayden had shut down twenty years ago.
Keith replied to his commentaries.
-Yes, that is true, Govener Kayden did shut down the system after his election, but he was not aware of the possibilities of threat to the city's safety. I had designed this line of deffense to protect our people from future attacks, when technology would advance on both sides of our races.
-I supose you were right all this time. We don't know what it is that the dragons have in plan, but we certainly know that they have some sort of destructive power.
Cougar jumped off of the generator that he was inspecting and onto the grid walk.
-And from what I have witnessed so far, they intend on anayalating us, one way or the other. Most of the generators are functional and would not need new peices, but we better bring in some new transformers, since those are made with copper, a metal that changes with age, a massive overcharge may blow a fuse, as some might say.
Cougar's assistant came through the small croud of technical researchers.
-Sounds like this field has a chance after all.
-We aren't only taking a chance, but a risk. Let's make this work.
Inside the station, Lieutenant Kentrose retreived the
information he had found before ont he merder of Basin Theodore.
He found that Flynn Pteroe and Slugger Gamma where both from the
Claw's intercom flashed, "Kentrose, report to communications, immideatly!"
Claw rose up and hurried to the telecom room.
-What is so important?
-We have a strange message on a short wave frequency. It's breaking up, but we think it's agent Shadow Lyon on the other end.
The reiceivers came to life witht e sound of Shadow's voice.
"We need to speak with Lieutenant Kentrose, and only the Lieutenant. Is he there?"
Claw picked up the microphone.
-Shadow? Is that you Shadow? And what is it that you mean by "we"?
"Gracious on high, finaly! You have to listen, this is vital information"
-What are you talking about!?
The voice that come on next was one that send cold chills down his back to the end of his tail.
"brother, you must beleive me, Tyranous has a cannon, a big cannon, something about photons and iron, on mount Kera..Keratofein... destoy it... save NewBridge..."
-Slugger? I thought you were dead.
"not... just yet"
Shadow's voice came back.
"Gamma has little time left, we are at the foot of mount Keratofein."
Shadow looked at Slugger surprisingly.
-I can't beleive it worked, the two way radio you made of the salvaged peices actually worked.
-We were just lucky.
-How much time do you think is left?
-Tyranous said he would give one hundred hours, being the mischevous liar that he is, he ment half of it, he is going to to fire the cannon tommorow, at noon. It is a weapon of complete destruciton, if Claw doesn't destroy it in time, there is nothing that can stop it.
-For everyone's sake, we can only hope.
Slugger shifted his eyes towards her and retook his breath.
-I though you didn't trust me.
-Through all the lies that I have heard, the truth has to come out. Why is it that you can only trust Kentrose with this?
-You must understand that ... he is the key to the future of all Terradi.
The sun was already passed it's peak point of the day, and the
heat was not going to die down anytime soon. Shadow brought
Slugger to a more secluted area where the sun wouldn't get them.
The stench of his blood left a trail sleakung all the way back to the little stream he was at earlier. His words slowly reaching her, vaguely, but with great intensity about the reallity of this grand importance.
