Explanation of the conversion:
History: Jonathan Storm, the second of two children born to a physician Franklin Storm and his wife Mary, grew up comfortably on Long Island. But a trip to California to visit his sister, Susan, forever altered Johnny's life. Sue's fiancÚ, aeronautical engineer Reed Richards, was building a starship capable of interstellar travel. When the government threatened to cut off its partial funding of the project, Richards decided to make an immediate test flight; Sue and Johnny insisted on accompanying Richards and his friend, pilot Benjamin Grimm.
In space, the starship unexpectedly encountered intense radiation, which caused the crew to abort the flight and the craft to crash to Earth.
Once back on Earth, the foursome discovered they'd been mutagenically altered by the cosmic rays. Ben was transformed into the orange stone-skinned Thing. Reed became the elastic bodied Mister Fantastic. Sue gained the ability to become invisible to the naked eye and became the Invisible Girl. Johnny gained powers over fire and became the Human Torch II. Richards convinced the others that the four of them should use their newfound powers for the good of humanity as members of a team he named the Fantastic Four (Fantastic Four #1).
''Now I know why I've been feeling so warm! Look at me!! They've affected me too! When I get excited I can feel my body begin to blaze! I'm lighter then air!! I can fly!! Look... I can fly!! - Johnny
The Fantastic Four faced their most unusual threat ever when the Impossible Man came to Earth and caused all manner of chaos. Unable to defeat the Impossible Man, Reed decided the best way to get rid of the annoying alien was to ignore him. When the Impossible Man became board with Earth, he flew away. Johnny then surprised Sue by throwing her a birthday party (Fantastic Four #11).
The Fantastic Four was then contacted by the army about trying to stop the incredible Hulk, who they blamed for sabotage in their missile testing. The Fantastic Four then flew in their new Fantasticar to a missile base in the south west where they met general Thunderbolt Ross, scientist Bruce Banner and his helper Rick Jones. At the time Bruce had an assistant named Doctor Karl Kort, who ended up being a saboteur called the Wrecker. The Wrecker kidnapped Rick and left a note for the Hulk that he had to get rid of the Fantastic Four if he wanted Rick back. Banner then changed himself into the Hulk and fought the Fantastic Four while looking for Rick. The Fantastic Four were able to find the Wrecker and saved Rick, so the Hulk left them. After a celebration over uncovering the saboteur, the Fantastic Four left the base (Fantastic Four #12).
Reed then invented a new super rocket fuel from fragments of a meteorite, which he used to build a ship that could take him to the moon. The rest of the Fantastic Four insisted on joining him. About the same time the Soviet scientist Ivan Kragoff planned to fly to the moon in a rocket he invented, aided by three trained apes. He also built his ship without any shielding, hoping to expose himself to cosmic rays and gain super powers like the Fantastic Four did. The two ships launched at the same time and Ivan and his apes gained super abilities. Ivan gained the ability to become immaterial at will and dubber himself the Red Ghost. Landing in the blue area of the moon the travelers discovered an abandoned city and the home of the mysterious Watcher. The Watcher insisted man's wars would not follow them to his home and had the two teams battle in the abandoned city. Reed was able to paralyze the Red Ghost with a ray he built, and then left the Red Ghost to his apes, who rebelled against him. The Fantastic Four
returned home (Fantastic Four #13).
While the stratigic value of Earth in the Kree/Skrull war had dropped so that it was no longer worth invading, the Skrull leadership felt it should take revenge on those who had opposed them on Earth. Commander Kl'rt was bionically engineered by Skrull scientists to mimic the powers of the Fantastic Four and dubbed him the Super-Skrull. The Fantastic Four defeated the Super-Skrull by cutting off him off from his powers (Fantastic Four #18).
The Fantastic Four used Doctor Doom's time machine to travel back in time where they met Rama-Tut, who captured them with a device which drained them of their powers. When Ben was chained up he turned human again and slipped out of his chains, but later on he returned to his stone-like form (Fantastic Four #19).
The Fantastic Four traveled to the Skrull Galaxy and they loose their powers. Reed bargained with the Skrulls and tells them he will create a device to help them conquer the Earth. Instead, he built a gun that restored their powers (Fantastic Four #37).
In a battle with the Frightful Four, the Fantastic Four were stranded on an atoll when the Wizard's Q-Bomb went. The four were saved by Sue's force field but the after effect is that they lost their powers (Fantastic Four #38).
In a climatic battle of the Baxter Building against Doctor Doom, Reed restored their powers using the device he created on the Skrull planet. Reed did not use it earlier because it was recharging after having been drained of energy (Fantastic Four #40).
Over the years Johnny has dated Crystal, Nova II and Lyja (in the guise of Alicia Masters).
Once it was established that Bruce Banner's mind was in control of the Hulk's body, the Hulk was treated to a celebration in New York City where he received a presidential pardon from Ronald Reagan, the key to the city, and praise from a number of superheroes, including the Human Torch II (Incredible Hulk #279).
He was among the heroes incapacitated by Graviton when he attempted to take over the Earth once again (Thunderbolts #57).
Trivia: Johnny took his battle name from the first Human Torch, an android hero of World War II who had powers over flame similar to those Johnny developed.
Trivia: The origin of the Fantastic Four is a popular topic for stories of alternate realities. Their have been worlds where they didn't gain any powers at all, or they were killed while attempting to take the rocket. Even more interesting are worlds where they gained different powers all together. Their have been worlds where Johnny gained Stretching powers, became a Thing, where he gained the ability to become desolid, and even worlds where be became the machine-like Mandroid.
Trivia: In the alternate future depicted in What If II #114 Johnny married and had a son with Avengers member the Wasp and named him Matthew Storm. This son became the hero known as Firefly, having the shrinking power of his mother and the flame powers of his father.
Powers: The Human Torch II possesses the mental ability to control ambient heat energy and the physical ability to envelop his entire body or portions of his body with fiery plasma without harm to himself.
Ordinarily, when aflame, Johnny is enveloped by a low intensity flame of low level plasma (reddish, approximately 780 Fahrenheit), which ranges from 1 to 5 inches from his body. He can, however, generate much higher levels and flames about himself. Johnny refers to his highest, hottest levels of plasma that he can create as his "nova flame." The exact temperatures that his "nova flame" can attain are not known.
At an average rate of expenditure of energy, Johnny can stay aflame for about 16.8 hours. In his younger days, he could only maintain his flame for much briefer periods, and sometimes exhausted it while in combat. He cannot maintain his "nova flame" for as long a time as he can maintain his ordinary flame. Johnny can release all of his body's stored energy in one intense, omni-directional "nova-burst," which can reach about 1,000,000 F, and which is similar to the heat-pulse of a nuclear warhead detonation, with an are of total devastation of about 900 feet in diameter. (Johnny has claimed that he can destroy a small moon with his nova-burst.) This violent discharge uses his entire reserve of energy (except for the necessary to keep him alive) at once, entirely exhausting his flame power. He generally requires at least 12 hours to recover entirely from such a feat.
Johnny can generate shapes composed of fire from any point on his body. (He usually employs his hands to "sculpt" the flames.) He can form fire into long streams, spheres, or even more complex shapes like letters in skywriting. These flames-objects will only remain their shapes as long as he concentrates upon them. The objects will only burn about 3 minutes before expiring unless Johnny continues to infuse them with energy. The temperature of these fiery projections is generally around 2,800 F (near the melting point of iron).
Johnny's plasma has a high hydrogen content, and is surrounded by an exuded cloud of mono-atomic hydrogen atoms. This hot cloud provides sufficient positive buoyancy for him to float. With mental stimulation of his flame, he can provide enough lift to carry 180 pounds. By forming a jet from his feet, directed behind him, he can achieve speeds up to at least 140 miles per hour.
Johnny has the ability to mentally control the ambient heat energy within his immediate environment, even when he himself is not aflame. He can reduce objects' temperatures (if they are in a normal range for existing on Earth's surface) to about 30 F, raise them to several hundred degrees, or extinguish open flames. His radius of influence is about 80 feet. The heat energy he takes from the environment is absorbed into his own body. If he takes in a critical amount while he is not aflame, he will become aflame. There are unknown limits to the amount of flame he can absorb into his own body harmlessly while he is himself aflame.
Johnny's flame is supported by the presence of oxygen, and thus is extinguished in low air pressure or a vacuum. Johnny's flame can be extinguished by smothering materials, such as water, sand, fire-fighting foam, and heat-resistant blankets, unless his flame is at such an intensity that it immediately vaporizes such materials on contact. If hit with small amounts of water, up to about five gallons, Johnny can turn it to steam with relatively little effort. More water than that could extinguish his flame at its normal level, and he would have to wait until he could evaporate the residual moisture before re-ignition.
Johnny's light output is mostly in the infrared and infrared region of the spectrum, and is invisible to the unaided eye. Less that 10% of his total power output is in the visible portion of the spectrum. Thus, Johnny, when aflame, is dimmer than one would expect of so powerful an energy source.
Johnny is unaffected by heat and flames, including his own, even when part of him is aflame and the rest of him is not. His flesh cannot be scalded or burned by any heat source whose level is below that of his maximum output.
