We Are Gathered Here Today Part II...
"What time is it now?" "2 minutes after the last time you asked me, Harlan," Bova answered irritably. "What do you care, anyway? It's getting closer, not farther away." Harlan scratched his head nervously. "And Thelma's on cue to call our families, right?" "Yes, Harlan," Radu told him soothingly. "Don't worry." Harlan turned back towards the mirror and straightened his uniform. "Yeah, well, you'd worry, too, if you were me." Radu rolled his eyes. "Harlan, I've already done this, remember?" "Oh, sure, throw that in my face." "Harlan, Cat's called," Seth told him. "She's ready." "Ah, jeez," Harlan muttered, running his hand over recently cut hair. "All right, all right... I guess. Let's go." Radu smiled and led Harlan out the door. "It's not as scary as it seems, Harlan," he remarked, trying to calm his friend. "It'll all be over soon and then it's not so nerve-wracking. It can even be fun." Harlan stared at him. "You're sickening, you know that right? You and Kaia? Absolutely disgusting. If Cat and I ever get like you, shoot me, okay?" Grinning, Radu said, "Do I have your word on that? Or are you going to pull out of it at the last minute and disappoint me?" Harlan was about to laugh, but turned back to look at Bova, deadly serious. "You do have the ring, right?" "Yeah, yeah, yeah, I got the ring," Bova grumbled, holding it up. Harlan sighed and allowed Radu to lead him off. Seth came up behind Bova and put an arm around him. "Don't worry, Bova," he said casually. "You're next." Bova froze. "Scared?" "Nope." "Nervous?" "Nuh-uh." "Anxious?" "No way." "Well," Suzee said with a shrug, "I'm out of adjectives." Cat grinned and brushed off her dress. "Good. I was out of ways to say 'no'." "You didn't say just 'no'," Rosie pointed out as she brought over Cat's pearl necklace and earrings. Cat shrugged as she put them on. "Ah well." "You're in an awfully good mood," TJ commented. "I was a wreck on my wedding day." "Yeah, I remember," Cat countered, grinning. "But I'm not worried. I've had a while to think about this and I'm ready." She fluffed out her skirt and ran her hand over a wrinkle. "You guys can go. I just need my hair done." Lokaia smiled and traded the brush she was holding for a comb. "I'm almost finished, Cat." Cat shrugged. "Yeah, but that doesn't mean you guys have to stay here." The others nodded and left, leaving Cat and Lokaia alone. Lokaia bent over Cat's shoulder to look her in the face. "You're petrified, aren't you?" "A little," Cat admitted with a shaky smile. "But I want to do this." Lokaia smiled back and continued on her hair. "I knew you'd say that." "Oh, boy," Harlan muttered as Cat came to stand beside him. She was wearing a white dress and veil over rainbow hair piled high. The dress had been in accordance to the ending of the Saturnian Rejoicing Festival, where Cat had gotten her fill of rainbow everything. She smiled at his expression and handed the white flower she was holding to Rosie. "Dearly beloved," Thelma began ecstatically, "We are gathered here today to join this human and this Saturnian in holy matrimony." In the viewscreen behind them, Harlan's mother and Cat's aunt wiped the tears from their eyes. Tara and Cat's cousins had wide smiles, and Cat's uncle had his arm around her aunt, grinning. Admiral Cody stood to the side, slightly less serious, though not actually smiling yet. Thelma was happily running through her speech. "Do you, Harlan Ryan Band, take this woman as your lawfully wedded wife, to have and to hold, for richer for poorer, for better for worse, till death do you part?" "Hasn't stopped me yet," Harlan blurted out without thinking. When everyone snickered, he regained his composure and said, "Uh, I mean, uh, yeah, I-I do." "And do you, Catalina, take this man as your lawfully wedded husband, to have and to hold, for richer for poorer, for better for worse, till death do you part?" "Hey, if he can I can," Cat countered, grinning at Harlan. When Thelma didn't move, she sighed. "I do." Grinning wildly, Thelma continued. "The rings?" Suzee and Radu stepped forward and handed the rings to Harlan and Cat. Harlan, hand shaking, placed the rainbow ring on Cat's finger, and she slipped the gold band onto his. "By the power vested in my by the starship Christa," Thelma continued happily, "I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride." Harlan cleared his throat and lifted Cat's veil. Taking a deep breath, he pulled her closer and kissed her. And when the rest of the crew applauded for them, Harlan lifted her up off her feet and kissed her longer. They finally seperated, laughing and faced the crew and their families, smiles wide.
