Itancanka : "Assume the position of female submission in collaring."
inahan : kneels, leaning back on her heels, her arms extended, wrists crossed, her head lowered between her arms, down
Itancanka : "Repeat after me"... 'This girl, once (her name) of (her home city or town, or of Earth)'...
inahan : repeats this.
Itancanka : "...herewith submits herself, completely and totally, in all things..."
inahan : repeats this
Personal Collaring say : "...to Him/Her who is known as (His/Her
name) of (His/Her origin)..."
Camp Collaring say: "To the Chief and Tribe Of The Yellow Knives..."
inahan : repeats this
Itancanka : "...as His girl, His inahan, an article of His property, His to do with as He pleases."
inahan : repeats this
Itancanka : produces the collar... in Yellow Knives this is a beaded choker collar, one and a half inches high with multi-colored glass or semi-precious to precious stone beads and worked in a pattern indicating the camp or the personal owner; the ends are laced closed in front and the collar is tied on a inahan's throat at the front in an intricate array of knots, again, special either to the camp or to the personal owner...
Itancanka : "this girl is Yours, Itancanka"
inahan : "this girl is Yours, Itancanka"
At this point, any Freepersons in attendance will typically congratulate the Itancanka on their new inahan.
When this is done, the new Itancanka will usually ask the inahan the following three questions...
Itancanka : "Who were you?".
inahan : tells Him former name
Itancanka : "What are you?"
inahan : "this girl is Your inahan, Itancanka."
Itancanka : "What is your name?"
inahan : "whatever Itancanka wishes it to be."
The Itancanka will then, if it pleases Him, may give the girl
her new inahan-name, which can be taken from her or changed at any time,
according to His whim. Although most will keep their current name until 3 days in camp at least go by and
the Shaman of the camp will have a naming ceremony where she will recieve her new name.
IN YELLOW KNIVES THE NAME FORMAT IS THUS:
Itancanka: "You are (new inahan-name)."
inahan : "Yes, Itancanka. This girl is (new inahan-name)."
The Ceremony is now over.
