Mistress of Calistar Cover (Cupidon by William Adolphe Bouguereau 1825-1905 - edited)

Rachael grew up in modern day USA, but she’s not human. She’s Tocari, exiled from Tocar the day she was born, both to save her from an evil immortal, known as the Huntsman, and to stop her from destroying her world.

The Huntsman pursues Rachael to her home in western Washington state and forces her to flee to a school for changelings built on the last known connection between the human and Tocari worlds. There she befriends Alex, the shy woodsman with the talent to shapeshift into animals, and Fiona, the volatile witch who is an outcast even among the changelings. She also meets Jave, a highborn Tocari who dreams of studying engineering at a human university so he can bring our power back to his people. He is a grandson of the Tocari goddess – one of the “Goddess Born” whom Rachael was warned to avoid. They are passionately drawn to each other but, by the Tocari laws and customs, their relationship is impossible.

Rachael is tricked into accepting the cursed ring, Calistar. As people around her begin to die her unique and horrifying Tocari talent emerges, making her both the most powerful and the most vulnerable mortal in Tocar. Only Jave can keep her alive, but to do so risks the destruction of their world.
