Agent Mulder was for years the driving force behind the series, though the interaction between himself and agent Scully really lit up the screen.
Mulder is an Oxford educated agent out of the violent crimes section who got his startat the FBI by putting away serial killers and other human offenders, via some very good profiling work. But then he came upon an area of the field that his higher-ups had not counted on; closed cases, deemed unsolved or impossible to understand, and termed simply "X-Files."
Mulder took up office in the basement of FBI headquarters and made The X-Files his life's work. His prime motivation in solving (or trying to solve) unknown cases is the fact that he believes his sister, Samantha, was abducted by aliens when he was a young boy.
Agent Scully was originally assigned to the X-Files in the hope of debunking Mulder's work and proving it bogus, but she soon found herself in a field she knew little about and grew to trust Mulder (if not his ideas.) Lately, as of this Season Eight, Mulder is missing -- supposedly abducted by aliens -- and Scully has been attempting to carry on his ideas despite the by-the-book attitude of her new partner.
Mulder's father worked with the United States government, and the shadowy Syndicate policed by CSM (Cigarette Smoking Man); CSM met with him shortly before his death; he was found murdered, shot through the head.
Agent Mulder's mother also died in suspicious circumstances.
